Perhaps Jamilia was made available in English before other Aitmatov works? I don't know, but I nominated Jamilia because I was intrigued by the synopsis and trusted friends' positive reading experiences. I'd like to read it with this group.

Are you nominating one of Aitmatov's other books? It wasn't clear from your post.

I enjoyed Jamilia quite a bit, but it is the only book of his I have read thus far. My guess as to its popularity over the rest are that it is both easier to find and also very short, compared to the others.

Laurie | 652 comments Champagne - Ardenne: Losing Julia by Jonathan Hull

County of Leicestershire: The Queen and I by Sue Townsend

Ulla Sperber | 2 comments For the county of Leistershire, I nominate The Sunne in Splendour. Though long, it has great reviews and Tudor England is really interesting. This one is about Richard III ...
