10.7 - Doing the Dewey

Roll two dice. Add the numbers you get together and read a book with the corresponding Dewey decimal designation: 2 = 200s; 3 = 300s; 4 = 400s; 5 = 500s; 6 = 600s; 7 = 700s; 8 = 800s; 9 = 900s; 10 = 000s; 11 = 100s; 12 =Wildcard- select a number from 1-11 and use the corresponding Dewey decimal classification. For the purposes of this task, Classify will be used to determine the Dewey decimal classification for each book. Your book must appear on the Classify website. The most frequent determination listed under DDC for your book edition ISBN* will be used to determine fit. It must be a number. Books may be fiction if they are listed on the Classify website and a number is the most frequent result.
* If you read an edition with an ASIN or a book without an ISBN use the page number determination method in the rules for the most popular print edition to determine an ISBN.
Ex: If you roll a 3 and a 2, the numbers add up to 5 so you would read a book between 500 and 599 in the Dewey decimal system.
Required: State the numbers you rolled and the Classify Dewey Decimal class.

Emily | 782 comments Okay, help me out. Aside from reading an Encyclopedia, what are the options for the 000s?

I checked the link in message 2 - looks like computer programming, bibliographies, encyclopedias, and newspapers.

Am I missing something?

Books about UFOs, Bigfoot, Yetis, etc. are usually in the 001s.

Here is one that works: Where Bigfoot Walks: Crossing the Dark Divide

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4474 comments Just to clarify ... makes no difference how MY library classifies the book, it's the First listing under DDC on CLASSIFY web site.

Do I have that right?

That's correct.

Bridgett (brikie) | 5 comments Okay so my virtual roll gave me an eight. Literature, drama, and poetry! Perfect since I'm trying to fit all the Harry Potter books into the Fall Challenge. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is first listed as FIC and then 823.914. Is this an acceptable option for the task?

message 12: by Trish (last edited Aug 22, 2016 12:08AM) (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3879 comments Just a suggestion - given that the Classify site seems pretty slow, would it help you lovely mods if we include the link to the specific Classify record in the task posting? Eg, I got the 900s, so my link might be: http://classify.oclc.org/classify2/Cl...

The individual pages seem to include a record link, so it probably shouldn't be difficult.

Kathy G. | 1931 comments I want to make sure I'm doing this right.
I rolled a 4--- which is the 400s.

I got this book from the library and it's
listed there as a 420.9

The Language Wars: A History of Proper English

thanks

How do you roll 0s? The least it could be on 2 dice is 2, 1 on each die.

The first listing must be a number for fiction to work.

The Dewey number that works for this task is the one at the Classify website.
You are in luck, Classify and your library agree- 420.9

If you roll a 10 then "10 = 000s;"

Lavender (purlav) | 374 comments So I rolled a 4 (2 2s). It's hard to find language related books, but I found this one in a box of books that I got from a friend when she moved. Does this count?

Sacred Signs: Hieroglyphs In Ancient Egypt

Here is the record on the classify site
http://classify.oclc.org/classify2/Cl...

I'm mostly not sure if it is long enough. Seems like plenty of text, not all pictures. Only a hardcover count is available, no paperback edition.

Diane (didi3023) | -18 comments I rolled 11 which I am understanding would be the 100s? So I chose Quiet Power: The Secret Strengths of Introverts 155.418232. I think that is correct. However, I am not sure if this book qualifies - it is not in AR Bookfinder so I am not sure whether it is classified as something I can read to meet the challenge?

It is helpful if you include the book link. Is this it? Quiet Power: The Secret Strengths of Introverts
If it has the genre childrens (it does) and it is not in ARBookfFinder (it is not yet) then it may only be used for task 5.10.
You could read Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking classified as 155.232.

OK, thanks. I already read that one so will look for another choice.

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) Just want to verify that I did this properly--I rolled a 3--so the 300's.

Thanks :)

My book choice is : We've Got a Job: The 1963 Birmingham Children's March

We've Got a Job The 1963 Birmingham Children's March by Cynthia Levinson

ISBN #--1561456276

Classify gives back DDC--Most Frequent 323.11960730761781

http://classify.oclc.org/classify2/Cl...

AR gives back--IL: MG - BL: 7.4 - AR Pts: 8.0

Melissa (balletbookworm) | 915 comments Ok, I want to check and make sure I interpreted this right.

I rolled a 3 and a 4 to get 7 - which means a book in the 700s. Life Moves Pretty Fast: The Lessons We Learned from Eighties Movies has a DDC of 791.43097309048 (http://classify.oclc.org/classify2/Cl...). This works, yes?
