I had a much dire image of Newgate! But, Seven Dials is much grimmer.
Thank you, Veronica! I look forward to these.

I knew Seven Dials was horrid, but I am surprised with the exterior of Newgate. If one was wealthy, the necessary comforts could be brought in (with bribes), but the poor were wretched.
Okay, so after switching my search terms, I was able to locate some interior pictures/renderings of what the interior of Newgate looked like.First a blueprint of the prison (one floor at least), which shows that men and women prisoners were separated, though perhaps all lumped together in the debtors section??

A collage of interior prints - I imagine the picture in the top, upper right corner might be the hall to the condemned cells

The real life hall

Perhaps a cell for the rich, where they could bring in their own stuff from home

Cell for the poor

The Exercise Yard
Thanks for the extra views, Veronica! They make a huge difference.
That exercise yard is an oxymoron:) Also, I can't imagine the women being mixed in with men in the debtors section. Perhaps there's no section for women because they weren't able to procure debt.

Often, debtors could even bring their families in to the prison with them. Charles Dicken's Little Dorrit has quite vivid descriptions.
Veronica wrote: "I keep meaning to watch Little Dorrit!"I loved the BBC mini-series with Matthew McFadyen
