Hey GFY'ers. I just accepted a job in Moorhead Minnesota. I live in Atlanta, and before this lived in New York, DC, Philly, and Taipei. Needless to say this is a GIANT change for me. Since there are so many GFY'ers from so many places I figured I would ask here. If anyone has inside info on Fargo-Moorhead, I would love some suggestions on neighborhoods, things to do, etc. Sorry for introducing non-literary topics. I hope no one is too bothered.

Joanie (joaniephotos) | 80 comments Congratulations on the job, Bonnie!

While moving to a new city can be a bit overwhelming, just think of all the great new adventures awaiting you!

Might I suggest joining a Meetup group in your new city? See if there are a couple with activities you enjoy and start getting to know people online before you actually get there. I did that before I moved to Vegas and ended up with many friends and outings to help me get familiar with my new surroundings. I got discovered lots of places I probably would have never found otherwise.

Thanks Joanie. I am a mover by nature, I love new adventures! But I have always gone to big cities where there are tons of things to do and places to go to meet people. NYC, DC, Philly, Taipei, even Atlanta offered those things. Now that I am going somewhere remote, and where there are not many transplants, I am a bit worried. A meetup group is a good idea. Thanks!

Stephanie Hi Bonnie! I'm in Minneapolis, which is about four hours south of Fargo. I'm in Fargo/Moorhead every once and awhile for work, and some of my dear friends are from the area, so while I've never lived there I'm a little familiar with it.

Because Fargo/Moorhead is about halfway between the Twin Cities and the oil-towns of western North Dakota, the Fargo area has really exploded in the last few years. Lots of new construction and new residents moving to town. There are some really good restaurants (I've enjoyed Mezzaluna, and one of my friends still talks about the beer selections at JL Beers), two college campuses (NDSU is quite large and has a very good football team!), the Fargo Dome usually gets some pretty big names in town for concerts, and the area is really beautiful in the summer.

You will absolutely need a car. There's no trains or anything, and the town is really sprawled out. It's also quite flat, so in the winter the wind is STRONG because there's nothing to really break it up, so be prepared for that.

Fargo is definitely not a city comparable to places you've lived in the past, or even comparable to Minneapolis/St. Paul, but it's also not some isolated tiny town like the movies might have you believe. Those tiny towns exist, and you'll definitely drive through them, but Fargo/Moorhead is not one of them. (That said, as much as we Minnesotans chafe at the accents on TV . . . they've pretty much got that part right.)

If you do need to get away to "the city," Fargo's located on a major freeway and it's an easy drive to the Twin Cities - which, if I can brag up my town a bit, is great. We've got all four major sports teams, beautiful parks, our dining scene is awesome, and a great arts/theaters scene. Also, from Fargo it's easy to get to Minnesota's Brainerd Lakes area, which is also beautiful and a great getaway.

I hope that was helpful! The good news is that because the town is growing so fast, there are likely a lot of people in your position looking for a chance to connect! The two colleges also mean that there are new staff members and new people coming to the area, so I agree that a meet-up group is a good idea.

Stephanie, that is such great info. Thank you! I have only been to Minneapolis once but i loved it. i am encouraging my 17 year old to look at Macalaster and Carleton so i might end up being there a good deal (more than he would choose for sure!)

Joanie (joaniephotos) | 80 comments I love this group because everyone is so helpful!

Can you imagine what it was like to move to a new place before the internet? I have major respect for my parents for having done just that. (I did it once, too, but I knew a couple people there already so I don't think it counts.)

It does help so much and I am grateful. I have moved to places where I knew no one, but both times with a man in tow. This time I am on my own, and that changes things. Stephanie's post made me feel so much better, and provided so much info. And I would never have thought of Meetups without Joanie! Thanks team!

Joanie (joaniephotos) | 80 comments I'm glad Stephanie is relatively near where you'll be, knows the area. You might actually have in person book club chats (I green with envy!).

Hope you have as much good luck as I had with Meetup. There are a few people from the one group who are still very special to me and with whom I remain in constant touch. Common interests are a wonderful way to bond.

You'll have to keep us updated as your adventures unwind. We wait with baited breath...er..

Stephanie I'm happy I could be helpful! Good luck, and while Fargo is going to be a pretty huge change from what you are used to, hopefully you'll enjoy the change of pace.

(Of course, you are moving from Atlanta to North Dakota right when it is starting to get cold, which may be a bit of a shock. Bring a warm coat, try and embrace the cold weather activities, and remember that summer is always right around the corner!)

Yes, this morning I realized I am leaving Atlanta at exactly the moment the weather turns good (we have not had a day below 90 in over 3 months, but after Labor Day it usually drops about 10 glorious degrees) to go to North Dakota at the moment the weather turns terrible. I am a terrible planner! That said, I need coats and boots, so it is a shopping opportunity! There must be cute Thinsulate. (Please say there is cute Thinsulate!.)

Joanie (joaniephotos) | 80 comments Check out 32 Degrees Heat clothing. We loaded up my daughter and son-in-law with plenty of their clothing prior to their move to Alaska.

Layers are your best friend :)

Larisa (lursa27) | 11 comments Agree with Joanie, layers are the way to go. Took me 5 years when I moved from FL to Boston to figure out that no matter the jacket, just short sleeves weren't going to cut it. :) Good luck!!

message 16: by Gigi (new)

Gigi | 30 comments I live in Minneapolis after living in Southern California for 7 years and could not be happier! As Stephanie mentioned, it is such a vibrant, fun city. It is a bit of drive from Moorehead. Moorehead has a great environmental/nature scene, especially with the University. The U should have a number of events, shows and groups to join. My husband went to Macalester and loved it, Marlon James teaches there!

Thanks Gigi! My son is touring Macalaster and i hope he will go there! He is also looking at Carlton. We have looked at a slew of schools, but my top picks are Macalaster and Pomona. Of course his choice counts too. ;). That is so good to hear that you love it. If you can deal with the weather change from Socal, the change from ATL should be easy.

i won't be at Minnesota State. I am going to a tiny college called Concordia. it is right next door to Minnesota State, so hopefully I can crash some of their activities. Your words of encouragement mean so much! I head out on my new adventure in 2 weeks! I have already indulged in some cute coat shopping so I am feeling pretty good!

I just wanted to let everyone know that 2 months in the move has been going well, and I am finding my tribe. I am blogging about my current life if anyone is interested. http://bklein62.wixsite.com/little-to.... Click on "blog" to get to new entries.

Joanie (joaniephotos) | 80 comments So happy to hear you're settling in well! I never doubted you'd find a new tribe quickly.

Couldn't get the blog to load (on cell phone), but I loved the photos on the main page. I think you captured the sky beautifully. Don't worry about what kind of gear you use to shoot, just shoot! (Kind of like how it doesn't matter what tools you use to write letters or posts, the same goes for what camera is used to take a picture. Gear is always trumped by intention and creativity!)

Looking forward to hearing more about your new experiences. :)
