It was a particularly average afternoon. October had just started, and fall was very obviously right around the corner, with leaves having just the slightest touch of oranges and reds. It was here at a quaint, homely cafe that Matthew was leaning against a counter, eyes drifting between the window and the clock that was hung carefully over the door. Nearly 3:15. It wouldn't be long before the cute customer, known to him as Ally - the only reason he knew this was because of the necessity of a name to go along with the orders. For the past few weeks, Matthew had been writing short messages on her coffee cup; just simple compliments, jokes, or wishes of a good day. He had to assume she was fine with it, as she never voiced any protests when she next came in. Today though, today Matthew planned to be a bit more bold.c~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ͻ
Ava sat outside the school building, head tilted towards the sky. School had just let out and now she was waiting for her small group of friends to walk home as they usually did. Though having a pretty chilled out teacher who's classroom was right near the buildings main entrance was nice, the wait for the rest of the group could be a lengthy one. The plus side was that she could enjoy the nice weather and the wonderful smell that came with fall. Smile on her face, Ava thought back the past few weeks since she had started school. Her family had recently moved, something that had been very abrupt, but so far it had gone smoothly.
Ally was currently enrolled in college so she'd developed a daily routine of after her last class she'd go to a nearby coffee shop and either just stay there and relax for a bit or get a start on her homework. Ally always noticed the notes on the cups of coffee and she started to look forward to them each day, curious as to what the barista would write on it today, well. If he was working today. She walked to the coffee shop, tying her hair up in a bun and humming softly to herself.----
Riley walked out of his class, talking to one of his friends as they walked to meet up with the rest of their friends. He usually always Hung out with the same people so Riley knew all of them pretty well, despite him being the most quiet in the group. He headed down the stairs and to the main doors. Riley messed with one of his lip rings, biting his bottom lip lightly, a habit that he'd had for years now. Riley's friend led him outside and over to where Ava and her friends were.
It was just a few minutes more before Matthew pushed up from the counter where he was leaning against it, eyes flicking once more to the clock. Not much longer, he spotted Ally outside the shop. With a genuine smile plastered on his face, he recited the standard greeting, "Welcome to Impresso Espresso, what can I get for you today?" Hands placed against the edge of the counter, he tapped a nervous rhythm with his fingers.c~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ͻ
When Ava opened her eyes again, she turned her gaze to the doors. She stared intently, as if she could force her companions to come out the door the next time it opened. Of course it didn't work, as a group of random students emerged instead, it didn't deter her gaze. Eventually though, her friends did emerge and she jumped up happily, hands thrown up in the air. "Finally! I've been waiting out here forever!" She draped herself dramatically against the first person she managed to come into contact with, a playful pout in her voice.
Ally smiled lightly, seeing the guy as she headed into the coffee shop. She ordered her usual Carmel macchiato. She noticed the guy seemed to be nervous and tilted her head just slightly. ----
Riley rolled his eyes, watching Ava for a moment. He actually knew pretty much everyone there. Except for Ava, which made sense considering she was the new girl. Yet, she still seemed familiar to Riley for some reason. Riley bit his lip lightly, staying quiet.
With a quick nod, Matthew grabbed the cup he had written a messaged onto in advance, turning away from her to prepare the drink. As he stood at the coffee machine, he took the time to take a few deep breaths, and let the stress fall out of his shoulders. tomorrow. . . He bit a lip, worrying it between his teeth. I will know her answer tomorrow. With a final sigh, he turned back to her with a smile. "That will be $3.75." He set the cup down onto the counter.c~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ͻ
Ava, as she always did, began her daily greeting towards everyone. Every now and again she would pout at those who had to bail on the group for their different sports or club. Finally she stood in front of the last of the group - Riley. She stood, hands planted firmly on her hips, and smile wide on her face. "Hiya Riley!" She didn't know the other to well, spending more time with some other in the group, but she did notice the other in a few classes of hers. That in mind, she decided she would get to know him better. It was always nice to have a friend for group projects.
Ally smiled lightly, paying in cash like normal with exact change. She also dropped a couple dollars into the tip jar on the counter. Ally thanked him, grabbing her coffee cup and heading to sit at one of the tables outside since it was a nice day. She looked at the coffee cup, looking for his message. Hoping there was one there. ------
Riley talked to the friend he'd walked out with while she said hi to everyone else. "Hi Ava." He replied, looking over at her and smiling lightly. Riley wasn't involved in any clubs or anything so he never abandoned the group or anything, not having anywhere better to go.
With a glance at the clock, Matthew held his breath. Ten minutes, and he was off. Letting out the held breath in a big burst, he shifted his eyes back to Ally. His eyes widened when he saw her turning the cup to look at the message. No, usually she doesnt read what I writes before i get off shift, He furrowed his eyebrows, Did she come early. . . No., no she didnt. Same time as usual, He shifted his eyes anxiously between her and the clock.c~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ͻ
Keeping her gaze on Riley, she narrowed her eyes and stared. Finally she grinned and hooked his arm with her own and began pulling him towards the front of the group and away from the people he was speaking to. "Come on, you're walking with me today!" With that, she began leading the group away from the school, skip in her step.
Ally walked outside and sat at a table. She set her coffee cup down, not having read the message yet, distracted by the buzzing of her phone. She checked it and rolled her eyes at the message from her friend. Ally bit her lip lightly, sending a quick reply before shifting her focus back to her coffee cup and the message on it. -----
Riley sighed dramatically and smiled at her, biting his bottom lip and messing with one of his lip rings. "Fine then." He walked beside her, looking around for a moment. "Is there a reason that I'm the lucky one who gets to walk beside you today?" He asked her curiously, tilting his head to one side.
Matthew relaxed his shoulders seeing her walk out to her usual spot, turning her attention to her phone. Though that didn't last long, as she turned back to the message. Nervously, he called to the back room, "Hey Mike! How long 'till Katey comes to take over shift?" The response was what he expected. Seven minutes, not a minute later nor sooner. Katey was always here the minute her shift started, out of breath and disheveled.c~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ͻ
Slowing down a bit so they walked at the same pace as the rest of the group, but still not releasing the others arm, she grinned cheekily at Riley. "Well," She held out the word, in her well known exaggerated manner, "We have some classes together. . .and i decided we need to get to know each other a little more!" She beamed up at him, as if it were the best idea anyone had ever had.
Ally read the message and smiled lightly. She didn't do anything about it, taking a Sip of her coffee before reaching for her backpack on the ground beside her. She opened it up, grabbing a textbook and a spiral notebook, setting them on the table. She tried to focus on the notes she needed to take. Which was hard for her, her thoughts continuing to wander back to her coffee cup and all the messages she'd gotten. ----
Riley shrugged. "Well okay then." He replied, not minding. "I'm not good with socializing though so I'm not sure how well this'll go." He warned her, running a hand through his hair to get it out of his face.
Matthew allowed himself to calm down, taking a few deep breaths, focusing on cleaning up around the counters and machines. He periodically glanced up at the clock and towards the back employee entrance, as if he could make time move forward simply by staring. A few minutes past with his intense staring. Just two minutes more. . . He began tapping his fingers on the counter, slowly counting down with the clock, readying to remove his name tag and head home.c~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ͻ
Finally releasing Riley's arm, Ava leaned forward hands crossed behind her back, as she looked up at the other. "How about. . .a game of twenty questions!" She brought her hands together in front of her, smiling brilliantly at the other. "Oh, oh! I will go first!" That decided and not a moment spared for Riley's input, Ava brought a finger to her pursed lips. "Hmmm. . . Whats your," A pause, "Whats your favorite movie?"
Ally glanced at the message again before glancing back inside the coffee shop. The guy was still there. I could go talk to him, she thought. Ally quickly shook her head. "That's a bad idea. Don't talk to him today. Maybe tomorrow?" She told herself quietly. Ally sighed quietly, forcing herself to focus, drinking her coffee and taking notes from her textbook. -----
Riley watched her, smiling faintly. She always seemed so bright and bubbly, unlike him who was a bit more quiet and reserved most of the time. "Favorite movie, hmm.." Riley thought for a moment, debating. "I guess Point Break." He answered, just picking a random movie he liked since he didn't have a favorite.
Finally, as if the stars had aligned to give him a break, in came Katey, panting and out of breath. Though usually he would stay for a moment and poke fun at her, for her speedy entrance, today he simply grabbed his bag, shooting a quick hello and goodbye before making his escape out the back of the shop. And now it was time to freak out and regret the message as he worried how Ally would react tomorrow.c~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ͻ
Ava nodded, as if his answer held the key to eternal life. "Uh-huh, uh-huh," She nodded some more, silent. As if a switch had been flipped, she was smiling again and looked at Riley expectantly. "Ok, now you ask a question!" She bobbed her head, nodding at her own words, as if that would make them even more true than they were.
Ally stayed out at the table for a good hour or so. She finished off her coffee pretty quickly but kept the cup sitting by her at the table, smiling faintly everytime she saw or thought about the message from him. She finally finished taking all the notes she needed and decided to go back home to her apartment.(SKIP?)
------
Riley tilted his head slightly when she was quiet for a moment but then smiled, seeing her go back to her normal self. "Biggest fear?" He asked her curiously, looking over and smiling. He bit his bottom lip, wondering about what her fear would be. He wasn't really afraid of much, most of his fears he'd already conquered. Usually by doing something that wasn't very smart such as conquering his fear of heights a few years back by jumping off a cliff into the ocean.
Matthew, despite the anxiety he had felt the rest of the day, was able to both fall asleep at a respectable time, and wake up with enough time to get ready for work. Which was quite the feat, considering on some days, which held less stress for him, he could barely pull himself out of bed. Throughout his entire work shift up until 5 minutes before Ally arrived he was mostly able to tune out his thoughts before his eyes landed on the clock.c~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ͻ
Ava barely had to think in order to answer this question, answering nearly before Riley had time to finish asking, "Being alone. I don't like feeling like i have no one to turn to or no one to depend on." Her smile dropped for a moment, and she turned her gaze downward. It was only a few seconds however, and she was back to her happy smile; it looked more forced this time. "I used to be afraid of dogs, but i got over it." Trying to hop back into a more happy mood, Ava prepared her next question, "What do you do in your free time?"
(Sorry I have no clue what happened And why I never saw this. Do you wanna keep going? If so, I'll reply. If not, I'm sorry for not answering....)

Muse A frequents a coffee shop every day after school/work, Muse B works as a barista there. Muse A always sits at the same table by the window, in plain-sight of the counter, preoccupied with a book or their laptop. Muse B can’t help but notice Muse A and admire them from afar. Too shy to go up and talk to Muse A at their table, Muse B finds another way to make an impression. Muse B begins to write nice messages on Muse A’s coffee cups, gradually getting a little bolder each day. “Have a nice night.” “That must be a good book.” “You look nice today.” “You have a cute smile.” Usually, by the time Muse A notices these little notes, Muse B has switched shifts with someone else. One afternoon, Muse A comes in and orders their usual from Muse B. When the order is ready, Muse A makes sure to read the note right away. This time, the message reads: “Would you like to go out with me?"
-------
Somebody I Used to Know
Muse A and Muse B are siblings, only they don’t know it. Born to teen parents who couldn’t handle the responsibility of taking care of (fraternal) twins, Muse A and Muse B were placed for adoption when they were infants. They were separated when Muse A was adopted first. Muse B was adopted a few months later, by a family who lived on the opposite end of the state. Due to the request of Muse A’s adoptive parents, Muse B’s adoptive parents never knew that another sibling existed. Muse A’s adoptive parents decided early on that they didn’t want Muse A to know they were adopted, therefore they hid the fact of Muse B being out there somewhere.
Fast forward several years and Muse A and Muse B are coincidentally enrolled in the same school (high school/college). They share several classes and just so happen to make friends with the same circle of peers. Muse A and Muse B begin to get to know each other and they quickly find that they have a lot in common; they start finishing each other’s sentences almost immediately. They even have similar mannerisms. Their connection is strange, but undeniable; in a few short months they become thick as thieves, an inseparable pair. When Muse B eventually mentions that they’re adopted, it makes Muse A curious to dig into their own family history. Although their parents insist Muse A is theirs by birth, they have no birth certificate to prove it and they get flustered when asked to get one. Muse A wonders if there’s a biological reason for the strong connection they feel to Muse B ...
