ROMANCE, MYSTERY, FANTASY CATEGORIES RATING: *** Status: Read May 10, 2014
Razo is a young boy in Bayern Own's army-the 100 best soldiers in Bayern's army. He has been nominated alongside a band of his fellow soldiers to go to Tira to protect the ambassador of Bayern in her efforts to dissuade the people of Tira from going back to war to retaliate against Bayern and their secret "Fire-witch". Razo doesn't quite understand why he is nominated by his captain to go because he is far from the best at ANYTHING, but he cheerfully goes, knowing it will mean he gets to be with his best friends Enna (who is the secret fire-witch) and her boyfriend Finn.
While in Tira, Razo's captain explains to him that he is there because of his keen observation skills, and he is meant to be a spy and solve the mystery of why so many burned bodies are showing up? Is it Enna? Or is someone trying to frame Bayern and drive the nations to war again? With the help of the mysterious red-haired Dasha, Razo solves the mystery, gets the girl, and saves both countries from an unnecessary war.
River Secrets is a really fun read, and like most Shannon Hale books, is made more interesting by the intricate details woven throughout the story. Hale takes time to make sure the nations and characters are really understood and detailed, and I enjoyed that!
