Melanie is a genius and things with a bigger angle. She knows that the survivors are not going to last and the only chance of evolution is the kids. The junkers and the remaining survivors won't allow the kids to live. What she did was very cold but with a vision for an actual future for this world. I think the new world will be filled with human species who are like the children, no need of normal vegetable or dairy. Live on uncooked meat of animals. There will be no cannibalism as they don't harm each other.
Melaine will definitely protect Miss.Justineau from other Hungries. As the pores are in the air, Miss.Justineau may herself turn into a hungrie. In the mean time she will teach the kids and make them capable enough to build up a future generation!

Great conclusion, Poonam! I enjoyed how Carey ends the book in a way that allows readers to speculate what the future will hold. The children are still vulnerable at this point, but with the help of Melanie and Ms. J, I think they will survive the Junkers to create a new world. This is evolution. =)
