Yes, that's us, the no-excuses-book-club! ;) There's a copy of this just waiting for me to go pick it up at the library - it looks like a lot of fun.
One of the things that makes this look so fascinating is that Madeline Miller really seems to know her material - she has degrees in classics and teaches Latin and Greek. Not your run-of-the-mill historical novel!
I'm a little bit afraid that after the awesome power of Homegoing that this might be a bit of a letdown - but looking at the way I'm racing through that one, I'll probably be able to get to this pretty soon.
I've just started this today. I've read the first few chapters and I'm liking it so far. The writing is pretty straightforward - almost like YA writing so it feels really accessible.
I'm about a third of the way through and so far it's pretty good. I've enjoyed reading about the boyhood friendship/romance between Patroclus and Achilles. It's quite a touching coming-of-age story in many ways.
Oh good! I just started it myself, so don't have much to say yet. There was a lot of name-dropping there at the beginning and I couldn't decide if I would just trust my memory or go look them up. I did notice she has a glossary of names at the end though!
I've finished now & I thought it was pretty good. It would make a great introduction to Greek mythology as it was so accessible and Miller's love of her subject really shone through, I thought. My review is here
