Roleplay Example - (view spoiler)[ Melinda had been running down the hallway of her school- The Walsh School For the Gifted in downtown Portland. She was late, and her hair smelled like the pastrami the corner deli below her family’s apartment served. Melinda was rushing past the ajar doors, and noticed that the large portrait of Henry Earl Walsh VI was askew. He was the founder of her school, which was one of his old mansions. And when she said askew, this portrait looked like it would fall off the wall. It was at least eight feet tall and three feet wide- enormous, just like the ego of Walsh himself, she assumed. She pushed on the shiny walnut frame, but instead, pressed a latch; the door swung open, to reveal a rather dramatic staircase with well-worn carpet and dull looking banisters.
“Now, Melinda”, She urged herself,” This looks like one heck of a pickle, and you better skedaddle.” Of course, just like Alice in the famous story, she ignored my conscious, and peered down into the abyss- well, that’s too dramatic a word. She walked down the stairs cautiously, clutching the banister for dear life. When Melinda neared the bottom, she pulled out a ballpoint pen (it wasn’t much, but she had learned in anatomy the neck is a good target), but stopped when all the lights turned on and she saw, the… the janitor? Only, he wasn’t fat, and he wasn’t balding- she would place him in his early 50’s, with his salt and pepper hair- like James Bond in need of hair dye. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ Bassam's father was furious at him... again. The man was always raging on about something-- it was either Bassam had done something wrong, or he hadn't done something right enough. Today, it had been that he hadn't been at the board meeting with the foreign prime ministers from Mauritania and Spain; a large mistake on his part, and one made with careful tact. Bassam was intelligent, intrepid, and outspoken to a fault, but the one thing he wasn't for sure was a future king. He knew he was privileged beyond belief, but the boy hadn't asked to be born with the burdens of a nation on his shoulders. For the past twenty years, Bassam had been doing everything in his power to convince his father he wasn't (and would truly never be) ready to be king. His father was stubborn though, and made it irrefutably clear his son would reign-- he was so thorough as to eliminate anyone he believed posed a threat to Bassam's throne.

As the timorous maids and servants quickly walked past him, avoiding all eye contact and even seeming to hold their breaths as he passed, Bassam could see his father had done his job well. He, the Prince of Morocco, was even more feared by the people than their king.

"Simo, could you please tell my father I won't be attending the banquet tonight. I've made prior arrangements." he informed the page that always seemed to be shadowing his every move. The young boy had a persistent habit of only staring at the floor but at this, his head snapped up with palpable fear laced in his eyes. "But my prince, your royal Majesty has insisted you must attend." he stuttered, his hands wringing nervously. Bassam felt a pang of pity for the scared boy-- his job of telling the king his [eldest] son would be outright disobeying him wouldn't be an easy one. Nevertheless, he made sure to stare directly into the servant's eyes and harden his glare. The young boy's eyes widened and he nodded before turning and hurrying off.

Bassam watched him leave for a moment before heading for the front gates of the castle. He'd have to leave before word reached his father. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ Aimi's hands trembled as she held the small baby bird in her palms. The poor little thing was barely breathing and the touch of human contact seemed to send its panicked mind into a frenzy. "Shh, you'll be alright little one." she whispered tenderly as she cradled the babe gently. The bird locked eyes with her and almost simultaneously calmed, as if soothed by the nature of her words. Aimi knew her governess would have a conniption if she saw her kneeling in the grass fields behind their Imperial Palace, but when she had looked out on a whim from her bedroom window and had miraculously caught sight of a tiny blur falling from the cherry blossom tree in the center of the yard, she had rushed out. It had fell much too quickly and with too much force to have been a blossom and on a prophetic hunch, she had believed it to be a baby bird. Thank goodness she had come out, because her suspicions had been right and it seemed the young thing had been abandoned.

Careful not to shake the bird too much, Aimi stood and headed back to the palace, entering through the servants' quarters. "Chihiro, come here." she called to the kitchen maid who also served as her closest friend. "Could you get me a basket, lay some fluff and a hand towel overtop." Aimi instructed as her friend's eyes widened at the sight of the animal. "Oh, Aimi, what will you do with that? The Empress will never let you keep it." Chihiro sighed before hurrying off.

When the materials were fetched, Aimi carefully laid the bird into the plush interior and carried the basket quietly and quickly to her room in the furthest corner of the west wing. Once there, she set the basket on her dresser before gingerly folding the towel over the bottom part of the bird's body. "I'll be back in a moment little one, my governess must be having a fit right about now." she whispered before running out of her room and tearing down the stairs. (hide spoiler)]

Anja's doll like eyes flickered around the room as she took in the fine clothing of other nobles. The style did not seem to differ from person to person, but she did not mind. It was just impressive to see them all there, flaunting the wealth they inherited because of the loins they were born from. Anja didn't flaunt it. She much more preferred to watch others do so, and it was quite entertaining to her. However, it was not the gossip of the other ladies that piqued her interest.

It was the talk of battles.

The soldiers and knights lucky enough to be among those of outstanding pedigree clashed their words loudly together, weaving beautiful tales of horror and blood shed. While the lords of the court partook in the rowdy conversation, Anja stood near by, listening. She pretended to not be interested. After all, It was not her place to find enjoyment in the stories of battle. She knew this, and yet, something about it fascinated her, causing her to become entranced.

So that was why, even as her fellow ladies eyed her with distaste, she stood by the soldiers, her sharp, bird-like limbs quivering in anticipation as she listened to stories of passion, blood and murder. If anyone knew she was actually listening, she would've been the topic of an unpleasant type of gossip...albeit a less pleasant kind than the type of gossip she found herself in already.

A lady of her stature, hanging so close to a group of warriors...There was no doubt in Anja's mind that they thought her a whore.
