I think I read this around 2010 when the 3rd or 4th book came out. I'm pretty sure one of the characters was a lizard and there were 3 or 4 characters traveling the world in a hot air balloon. Part of this world was very technologically advanced but I think the rest wasn't. Sorry for the lack of detail, I hope the format is unique enough.

Were the other characters animals or humans? What time period/location does the story take place? Was the planet Earth or somewhere else?
Can you describe the layout of the book more? Was there a page of comicbook style art, followed by pages of text-only, vice versa, or something else?
Your description of the illustrations made me think of The Invention of Hugo Cabret. I haven't read that one myself, so I'm not sure about the plot and characters, but I do know it's a combo graphic novel/novel. Won the Caldecott Medal too.

I think most of the characters were animals one might have been a robot but I'm not at all positive. It's definitely in a fiction world. There were 3-5 pages of comic followed by ~10 pages of text if i recall.

The style was more illustrative and set up more like normal comics.
The Gesso Squad series by V J Brockett? Volume 3 is "Sky Balloon and the World of Flutes" -- https://www.amazon.com/GESSO-SQUAD-Gr...
