Cinder is a very entertaining retelling of the Cinderella fairy tale. Set in a futuristic earth in New Beijing this is the story of Cinder, a cyborg, working as a mechanic in a marketplace. When a young man comes in to have an android repaired Cinder realizes that he is Prince Kai, son of the Emperor. Thinking that possibly her life may be due for a change, Cinder begins to hope she might have a better future. But an evil step-mother and equally evil step-sister stand in her way. Fortunately she has an ally in her other step-sister and her only friend - an android. But much of Cinder’s past has been hidden from her and as it slowly comes to light she realizes she may play a huge part in the future of the world.
This is a YA series, well done with great world building and interesting characters plus a number of subplots involving another species of humans known as Lunars. To say more would give too much away.
I had been eyeing this book for a while and while looking for something light to read on the beach I finally picked it up and throughly enjoyed it, reading it in two days. I immediately picked up the next book in the series, Scarlet, which I also read in two days. I already have Cress - book three lined up for a read very soon. If you enjoy fairy tale retellings with a bit of dystopia thrown in this is a series you should look into.
