Fantasy Book Club discussion

Hi all,

New to goodreads and I have to say so far so good. I used to read fantasy a lot as a kid and kind of moved away from it for a long time. Started out with R. A. Salvatore and the Dark Elf Trilogy (great reads!!). Here recently I find myself coming back to fantasy. My local used book store had a few books that I recently picked up (see below). Just wondering if anyone has read these and whether or not these are good reads for someone coming back to fantasy after a long hiatus.

My older son liked the Lackey ones; I couldn't get past the first book. Had a hard time with Ash, too, but that's just me. I've read reviews that gave them high praise.

Thanks Martha. I think I'll start with the Earthsea series before starting Lackey.

I've read the The Outstretched Shadow, To Light a Candle, and When Darkness Falls. While I would not list them in my top ten and did think they were well written, entertaining stories.

The Ash books were ok but it has been 10 years since I read them so don't really remember many details about them.

Only heard of Mercedes Lackey, but haven't read these books. Can't say I've heard much talk about them in any groups I'm in.
Same with the other authors. But that doesn't make them bad.

I remember liking the Ash books overall, though I can't remember the specifics of the books.

IMO, they're worth a read, but they didn't especially "STAND OUT" for me; certainly not in my Top 15 or 20 fantasy series.

For Mercedes Lackeys? Her stuff is generally worth a look. She's best known for her Valdemar stuff, so it was kinda nice to see her branch out a little.

But, as with with the Ash stuff, I liked them, but they didn't truly stand out for me.

They're certainly a good re-intro to Fatnasy if you've been away awhile, especially if you can get them at a deal! The world-building on them is decent, without being overwhelming, and the stories are certainly serviceable.
