“you don’t forget the face of the person who was your last hope”-Hunger Games
This is Hamitch speaking to Katniss and Peeta and explaining to them the intenseness of the games. Both Katniss and Peeta are about to enter an arena of pain and death. He has been in their situation before and lived through it. He is trying to convey the seriousness of the situation. He understands that death is a very real thing especially in the games. There was a time where Hamitch was at his last straw in the arena and a tribute from district 4 stooped down and saved his life. The intensity of that moment shaped him into the man he is now. He was given grace and essentially life because he should have and could have been killed if it were not for the district 4 tribute. He later went on to win the game and he watched the tribute who gave him grace, die in the arena. The bigger picture Hamitch is explaining is that life is precious and helping others is very important. He is saying that without teammates and friends you will not have a last hope. It was his way of encouraging Katniss and Peeta to find others and strike treaties so they can have a chance at surviving.
“District 12: Where you can starve to death in safety.”
I chose this quote because of the irony it holds. In the story Katniss and Peetas district is shown to the outside world as a safe and joyful place. When in reality it is a dangerous and treacherous lifestyle. There is a lack of resources and and food. Most of the inhabitants are sick and starving because of the harsh rules enforced in the area. They are denied rights and have little to no freedom. The quote is said by Katniss when she sarcastically responds to a press conference. The capital is trying to perceive a false image of the real district 12 to the rest of the world. It was an incredibly big deal because her comment showed others the truth of what really happens. The capital is built on a lie. They constantly lie to everyone and use their police force and punishments to maintain their rule. There are many conspiracy’s within the world in all of the districts. I believe the author is criticizing the government for holding secrets from the people. She shows how detrimental secrets can be. The truth is essential to happy citizens and without it turmoil will occur just as they did in the Hunger Games.
“We could do it, you know." "What?" "Leave the district. Run off. Live in the woods. You and I, we could make it.”
This quote shows the desperation that Katniss and Gale face. This is very important because her decision will shape the person she will be and also the difference in life and death. If she chooses to leave it would make her the kind of person who avoids there problems. Katniss chooses to stay. She actually step into danger vs. away from it. This dialogue is very important to the story because it is where you see Katniss become a leader. She stops only caring for herself and for others. Her choice to be a selfless leader is a lot like Murl form the walking dead. He is the kind of person who would be better off alone and surviving. He does not need help or assistance. He refuses to leave other behinds and helps those in need. The quote "a strong man can take care of himself. A stronger man takes care of others is what I think about. Although Katniss a women she is still a strong leader. Both Katniss and caleb both are strong people by not only thinking of their own safety and needs but also that of others.
“If Peeta and I were both to die, or they thought we were....My fingers fumble with the pouch on my belt, freeing it. Peeta sees it and his hand clamps on my wrist. "No, I won't let you." "Trust me," I whisper. He holds my gaze for a long moment then lets go. I loosen the top of the pouch and pour a few spoonfuls of berries into his palm. Then I fill my own. "On the count of three?" Peeta leans down and kisses me once, very gently. "The count of three," he says. We stand, our backs pressed together, our empty hands locked tight. "Hold them out. I want everyone to see," he says. I spread out my fingers, and the dark berries glisten in the sun. I give Peeta's hand one last squeeze as a signal, as a good-bye, and we begin counting. "One." Maybe I'm wrong. "Two." Maybe they don't care if we both die. "Three!" It's too late to change my mind. I lift my hand to my mouth taking one last look at the world. The berries have just passed my lips when the trumpets begin to blare. The frantic voice of Claudius Templesmith shouts above them. "Stop! Stop! Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark! I give you - the tributes of District 12!”
This is all about how two star crossed lovers almost took their own lives rather than killing one another. They care about each other and were not going to harm one another. Selfless describes their actions towards one another. Through out the games they were on one anothers sides and were not trying to gain anything. This is like Romeo and Juliet. They could not live without one another. So they both chose to die then to lose eachother. this allusion is very accurate. Romeo and Juliet also killed eachother because they could not go on without one one another. Life was not worth livi for Romeo and Juliet and katniss and peeta
“Destroying things is much easier than making them.”
This quote can seem humorous but holds it a lot of truth and sadness. In the book destruction is apart of the life there. Killing was an everyday thing in the districts. Constantly bombings and fires would break out across the divided nation. This quote was spoken by Katniss when she was talking about her home. And what was going on. The blackmart was destroyed and it was a loss to the entire district. In her town they did not have machinery and building crews so when a town was destroyed it was a heavy loss. Destruction is something that can happen mindlessly and easily. It generally doesn’t take thought or effort. While in comparison to building it’s the opposite. It can take years to build a magnificent skyscraper. It takes endless amounts of energy and thought. It is something that is good and helpful to society. Destruction can take a matter of seconds. It is not skillful or talented. It hurts things around it. When a building is destroyed it takes a ridiculous amount of time to clean the site and build something new again. Destruction is evil and easy while building is good and hard.
