The Walking Read - A group for zombies and post-apoc fiction discussion

We're mid-way through the month but I want to get the ball rolling and settle on a book for us all to read in Sept.

So I'm looking at you guys for recommendations for anything post-apoc or dystopian for us all to have a look at. It doesn't have to have zombies in it, it just has to be a book where the world as we know it is dead.

I never said this group was going to be cheery, did I ??

Looking forward to seeing your suggestions, and I'll choose the winner! I'll also get in touch with the author and see if we can get him/her here to chat about their book.

The Last (zombie ocean series) by Michael John Grist.

Currently Im reading District (Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse) Book 11. by Shawn Chesser. Its a great series. My Recommendations are Adrian's Undead Diary, Zombie Fallout Series, and Deadlocked Series(my all time fave).

What about Wool by Hugh Howey? Or SawKill by Matt Fitzgerald?

I started Wool but didn't finish it, not sure why. I think it's my attention span

I second Adrian's Undead Diary or Zombie Fallout. Those were both fantastic series. But everyone may already have read those...

Obviously there are a whole lot to choose from! I wanted to suggest one of the basic texts on the subject, Skipp and Spector's Book of the Dead.

How about the Rising Dead by Devan Saglian. A very good book that I would happily read again.

Is it a series? I will check it out. I have read Fallout by Mark Tufo too. I am now reading The Remaining Series which is military fiction but very compelling.

Another series I will recommend is a post apocalypse zombie series by Rachel Higginson, Love and Decay. So far there are I think 4 seasons and it also includes a romance and has a female protagonist as well as strong males. This is the first episode of the first season but you can buy the first Season by itself too.

I would recommend incubation green fields by Adrienne lecter there are 5 book to this series love it

I just want to point out that the month is half over -- who's gonna be able to gulp down a whole series in 2 weeks?

Never said we had to read the whole series start book 1 and go from there

But half the people here are suggesting whole series, is all!

I know i will try to stay on the one book topic

Th next book that i have to read is z children Awakening by eli constant haven't read it yet

How about living dead boy by Rhiannon Frater? Her books are awesome and the 2nd one in the series is due out soon.

HELL DIVERS by Nicholas Smith

Currently reading the 11th book in the Awaken series by Michael Stephen Fuchs, #12 in the queue as well. I've thoroughly enjoyed them all, wel written good characters. I've read Wool but wasn't as impressed, bit of a struggle really.

I think you mean the Arisen series? Amazing books but so much to cover in only two weeks.

Until the End of the World (Until the End of the World, Book 1) by Sarah Lyons Fleming is a great read and it is currently free for Kindle.

Let's see... being a HUGE Post-Apoc guy, I've read:

Passage Trilogy -The Passage was the best book I've ever read

First several Zombie Fallout, good, funny, but I had to bail, cause the books kept coming.

Joe Ledger Series - starting with Patient Zero, this isn't all about zombies, each book puts Joe Ledger's team vs some sort of extra-wordly foe. Zombies, creatures, aliens. As quick as I was to bail on Zombie Fallout, I'm on like book 6. Jonathan Mayberry is a great author.

The Infection War series - Craig DiLouie is the man. The first book, The Infection is AWESOME. Punches you in the gut almost right away. Can't wait for the third book. The author actually gave me advice on writing when I first started.

Hell Divers - stumbled upon it on an advertisement... had to read it. Glad I did. It was very powerful! Can't wait for the release of the 2nd one...

The Wool series - more dystopian, but very, very good. It has some slow spots, but it keeps you pulled in.

Wayward Pines - better than the Tv show. READ IT!!!

One Second After Series - again, more dystopian. If you DON'T want to fear how we'd really treat each other, if ish went bad. Don't read this book. It really give a bleak viewpoint on how messed up we are as human. That being said, it was an EXCELLENT book.

The Road - Paul Mccartney classic. Nuff said!

I've read others, but these are amoung the best so far.

The Road is by Cormac McCarthy (close :) ) -- one of the best books I've read in the last few years.

Why not setup a poll and based on the books that everyone's suggested and we read that for October?

You're right Ki, got my series mixed up. I was talking of perhaps reading one, not the whole series, they're all good.

Zombie Fallout is worth continuing. So what if there's a lot of books in the series? The characters are awesome, and it gets to the point where you really don't want it to ever end.

Is Mark Tufo milking it for everything it's worth? Sure. Wouldn't you, if you struck gold? I'm up to book 9, I think, and they are ALL worthwhile, IMO. None of them feel like filler, they all continue the story and make it ever more epic. And Sean Runnette (sp?) is the perfect narrator, if you're into the audiobooks.

Yes sean runnette is the best narrator he makes the books come alive

I LOVE Sean Runnette!!!
FYI if you haven't read Book of Riley (the family pets running from zombies) by Tufo and Runnette there are 5 of them and I like them even better than Zombie Fallout. Runnette also just did the audiobook for Breeds (seriously werewolfy) by Keith C. Blackmore who did the Mountain Man (zombies) series and he's fantastic narrating that one as well.

Mountain Man is pretty darn good, and I'm surprised it isn't mentioned more. The short story that starts off the series is called The Hospital, and it's a free download from Audible.com.

Here's the thing Herm... originally, (I don't like to say negative things about authors on here) I did think that Tufo was milking it a little bit. And at that time a few years back, I had never come across anything more than a trilogy. So once I notice how his books kept going... I was like, "C'mon man." The last one I read was The End Had Come and Gone, which I think was book 4.

But like I mentioned earlier, I'm up to book 6 on the Joe Ledger series and I love it. I have to admit, I did love the characters in the ZF series, it just felt like they were dragging out ways to wrap it up. I may indeed give it another try though.

Lol i wont but i love zombie book and audiobooks

Right now I feel kind of out of breath at all the reading I'm gonna hafta do to catch up with all of youse.

BTW The Hospital was my least favorite installment of Mountain Man - a bit over the top - so if you like it at all but find it a bit "much" you should give the first book a try.

I enjoyed "The Remaining" series by D.J.Molles, just finished the sixth and last. Good characters, great concept, emphasis more on the human interaction than zombies. Of course, one can have only limited interaction with zombies......

Yeah, that's a good series, too, though I've only read the first 4 books so far.

Another highly regarded P.A. book is Day by Day Armageddon, by JL Bourne (but don't bother with the follow-up books).

The Remaining and Day by Day are both on my top five favs list. Day by Day got a little weak in the middle with global conspiracy blah blah blah but the most recent one was just as good as the first to me. I really like the whole series - especially when compared to all the other z choices most of which are unreadable - but the first one was SOOOO good I think the next couple paled but only in comparison.

Looks like we need to decide on an October book read......
