I know this is a group about Clamp, but there's no harm in talking about other mangas, too!

what's it about?

it's about the borgia family in 15th century italy. you get to read about politics, corruption, murder, marriage, incest...
ah, it's a ton of fun. i'm sad that it isn't closer to historically accurate, but higuri does keep it interesting.

virtually none. slightly disappointed. there's a bizarre love triangle between cesare, chiaro, and lucrezia. lucrezia loves cesare who is in love with chiaro who is in love with lucrezia. but there are hints that cesare may have more than just brotherly feelings for lucrezia, lucrezia might be falling for chiaro, and for some reason chiaro is drawn to cesare. so it's tough to pick who you want to get together. half the time you feel like you don't want anyone to get together. the focus of the series is cesare's struggle with his demons, and the power struggles going on in italy in the late 15th century.
red river has more shojo and is also a hist-fiction. though that one also focuses a lot on war and political scheming.

yeah, there's a decent amount going on in the series.

i haven't read that one. but i guess i know what you mean. sometimes a pure romance story is what's best.

cantarella sounds interesting

message 10: by Starbubbles, event coordinator type person (new)

yeah, plus they add historical notes in the back to fill in the missing gaps.

i next to never use the glossary. i'll read it at the end if it's cultural notes, but i won't bother with the sound effects.

what gets me about the cultural references is that the majority of the time i can use context clues to fully understand what is going on. but i still appreciate the consideration.

Eden Silverfox (tsalagi_writer) I've read InuYasha, Revolutionary Girl Utena, +Anima and a few others.

I just checked out the first one from the library, but I haven't had time to read it yet.

utena is awesome. terribly weird. but awesome.

come to think of it, honey and clover is at my library too. must go and check it out...

well, it is a bit squiggly. that is why i originally put it off many months ago. that and i couldn't get into the story. but half the time i can't read at all in the story. so sometimes it's a poor judge if the book is worth purchasing or not. sometimes i have to give it to my sister or boyfriend and tell them to read some of it anf tell me if i'll like it. lol.

with utena, i'm not so sure. i think it's really good. but it is weird. and i don't mean that lightly. but the manga makes more sense than the movie. and there is an anime, but i've never seen it.

Aw man, when I checked it out I didn't have time to read it! And then I forgot about it! I'll go get it again...

I'm reading this intense book called Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning right now! It's one of the craziest mysteries I've ever read! I wish I had an imagination like the author's!!

haha! i've done that so many times!
spiral, like the dectives spiral. i have the first four or five episodes of that anime, it's really good! should have gotten the box set, and figured out what to do with the extra disc later.

i tried reading honey and clover multiple times, and i just couldn't get into it. i gave up about half-way through it.

I'll put it on hold again. I'll go through book 6, like you recommended.

Ah! You know the Spiral I'm talking about!? I edded my post to include the full title of the book, just to clarify. But yes, it's about this high schooler who's detective brother disappeared, but he's just as amazing at solving crimes as his brother. And, if the term "Blade Children" is not familiar to you by the end of the first book, then you're reading a different series.

YA! I love it! I think the published book is under "the Bonds of Reasoning," But I think it is also under that blade children one!

message 25: by Mercury (new)

Mercury (thecourtjester) CLAMP's stuff, I've read xxxHolic, Tsubasa, Tokyo Babylon and what there is of X1999 (FAVOURITE SERIES EVER O_O)
Started reading Kobato but didn't get into it...
Read a bit of Legal Drug...

Non-CLAMP, I've seen Berserk, Code Geass, Death Note, Gravitation, LOVELESS, Kuroshitsuji, Vampire Knight, Hellsing and D.Gray-Man...that I can think of...
I've been meaning to get round to Full Metal Alchemist.

Haha! There is only a bit of Legal Drug. Though, I did like what I got ahold of

I keep hearing about Legal Drug... Should I go read it?

message 28: by Starbubbles, event coordinator type person (new)

Starbubbles | 649 comments Mod
Um, I liked it but it's grossly incomplete. There's two or three volumes and they solve mysteries. I think you might like it since you like Holic. But, I don't know if I would recommend you purchasing it since it really does stop right in the middle of things

message 29: by Hylian Princess , Hylian-Chan (new)

Really? That's lame! I think I'll check it out at the library.
Have I told you about Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning already?

message 30: by Mercury (new)

Mercury (thecourtjester) LOL, I realised I hadn't read all of the Legal Drug available so I went looking for it and finished it about a day or two ago. They really did drop it off in a massively inconvenient place I have to say...so many unanswered questions...

I think the relationship between the characters is kinda similar to Watanuki/Doumeki - the girly, spaztic one that doesn't seem to value himself or life very much, and the dark, more silent, sarcastic one that ends up always having to save the other etc etc. There're definitely parallels between the two. In some ways you could compare Kakei to Yuuko as well...

With Legal Drug though, the m/m undertones...really aren't as subtle as in xxxholic or as in quite a lot of their other wtuff (tbh, I was a bit surprised by almost how forward they were being, but hey no complaints! XD) It's one of those where seriously, if they don't end up together in some way by the end, you will be sat there with a perpetual D: face for a good couple of hours afterwards. They haven't even bothered to bring in a possible girl-love-interest for either...

I'm interested at the last few ones though, which make it seem like it might dip back into 'what happened next' with xxxholic after that manga finished...

(RANT OVER ^^;)

Starbubbles | 649 comments Mod
Well, I think the relationship makeups between the heroes are set up very different in the two series. Well, friendship wise anyway. But yeah, I don't think they ended things on purpose. I think it was dropped

Hylian Princess (hylianprincess) | 400 comments Mod
ooo I hate it when that happens... you're so into the books and then they just stop writing more.. gr. happens all the time.

message 33: by Starbubbles, event coordinator type person (new)

Starbubbles | 649 comments Mod
So true. It can happen for so many reasons too! The publisher doesn't want to pursue it anymore, the writer has other project they want to focus on or are more popular...

message 34: by Hylian Princess , Hylian-Chan (new)

Hylian Princess (hylianprincess) | 400 comments Mod
I got into this series that I really liked and the publisher decided to sell the rights to another publisher and if the new publisher ever continued it, I haven't been able to find the remaining books. It was sad.

oops, not this series as in this topic. I meant a different series that I was reading once upon a time.
