There is this exact same question debated on the Angels and Demon´s thread.

In a world without science, if you're over forty, you'd most probably be dead. If you're younger, there's an excellent chance you would have perished at an early age from plague, cholera, tuberculosis, flu, or an infected wound. If you wear glasses, or have any other minor disability, you would find it a major obstacle to a fulfilled life. A world without science is a world without a hope. A debate around this 'question' is an exercise in banality.
If you mean by not having one or the other, that we have no concept of the missing one, then I would prefer a world without any Religion. But if you mean both exist but one is forbidden by law at the point of a gun, then I wouldn't want to live in either world where Science or Religion is forbidden.
I would rather live in world where more could see how to two compliment each other, rather then try to disprove each other. A world without Religion and Science, but full with Faith and Wisdom.
Religion. This does not include faith, hope, or belief. Ridding the world of the #1 reason for creation of hate, war, and death sounds like a good idea to me.
That is a really hard question to answer. But based on past abuses, I would say religion. Because religion without science is really scary stuff. But science without religion just needs a code of ethics, which does not necessarily require a religious background, but a humanist one.

Religions are tribal, primitive and divisive. Spirituality is the one that we need. There can't be a human world without science though. Just not possible.
Science can improve the world; religion can improve people. If I could only have one, I'd reluctantly choose science as it is a constant, whilst religion can be open to interpretation according to the need of the day.
Just from a personal stand point, and not one where I think about the world as a whole, I'd rather live in a world with religion and no science. I earned my degree in religious studies, which is where my bias now lies. I am not religious myself, but I find value in it for others, and for my self from an educational point of view. And where I find science fascinating, so much of it goes over my head and therefore I would not find myself studying it. Again, a selfish point of view but still where I stand on it
I would rather live in world without religion but with science. I do not believe that religion makes a person good or civilized. It can enhance what is inherent in people, but it cannot cure illness or provide advances. Without science, we wouldn't have survived as a civilization.
No way this discussion could happen without science. It's being conducted on computers. Without science, they don't happen. Good or bad, they just don't happen.Of course, since science is knowledge, even things like fire and the wheel were due to science. Well, man's usage of them, at any rate.
Science and religion are not at odds. Science is simply too young to understand. Basically Religion is the science provided by God what we believe and chain our demons. I do not see any difference in any of this 2. But it would be great if there was no racial diversity based on religion among people.
There is a need for both. One of my favorite proverbs is a Chinese one that says, 'If two business people always agree, one of them is not needed.'
We need both to question each other, doubt each other, which leads to learning.
I'm currently seeking reviews on my book, which addresses both science and religion. Contact me for a free copy.

I understand the stand point most people have made about science and religion being complementary to each other. For me religion is a way of life. It is the basic lifestyle we follow according to our cultural context and science is what helps us live this life style.
This is actually a very simple question to answer.Science has saved many, many lives over the years and has increased the body of human knowledge.
Religion has done nothing but murder millions.

Science has also murdered many people. Name a military weapon that wasn't the result of science? Nuclear weapons? Science. Amazing submarines with cruise missles? Science.
And, Mother Theresa? Religion.
But, this question is about as meaningful as "Would you rather live in a world with no food? Or, one with no water?"
Ron, I believe you are confusing science with people.Science hasn't killed a single person, except perhaps Mme. Curie.
Religion, on the other hand...
I've gone back and forth between religion and/or science, and I must say that I cannot pick. I believe that religion tends to fuel science, and visa-versa. Early man believed in travelers from the stars, and the bible says it was Jesus. I tend to believe in a mixture of both, which is not easy, but it works for me, and that's what I would prefer.

So, in the other hand case, people didn't do the killing?

Both are quite essential I suppose. Without religion, the world would be..a lot of things. Without science, we'd have nothing.
I do realize that thous two worlds are likely to be against each other , A religion man is always referring all to his god and religion for good and bad, A Science man will always try to find a natural reason for things and remove the almighty god power from the mind of people. But a wise eyes will know that with no Science there is no god and with no god there is know real religion.
If we didn't discover how big the universe is with all the starts and galaxies we would never understood the greatness of God creation.
If we didn't learn how hard the human body works with all the organs and heart and blood we wouldn't know the mercy god have to make us live with peace in this world.
Science and religion are mostly related if you looked from the right angel .
Why is this a question? A world without science would be one without any smart people... A world without religion would be one without easy to control ones.
Although I am religious I vote a world without religion. Every major war in history was a conflict of religious ideology.Science will eventually realize that there is more and acknowledge religion. As an example look at the scientists who are quantum physicists and have advanced to acknowledging a higher power - Dr. Wayne Dwyer and Gary Zukof as examples.
Easy.Look at status Quo.
People with no faith in the divine (secularists, atheist, agnostics) are still alive and healthy.
People can't live without science. Why? Science influences life itself through :
1. Medication
2. Work
3. Devices that makes life easier (Computer, phones)
Imagine a world without science and religion!somehow ,humans will through evolutionary tendencies formulate an unaltered science!(yeah it will take time) .
On the other hand religion doesnt gurantee similar consistencies.
whatever is unperturbed through the test of time is modestly important.
Het wrote: "Imagine a world without science and religion!"A world without religion is a world without spirituality.
A world without science is a world without knowledge.
How could we live without either of them let alone without either of them?
Ron..what I am saying is lets throw ourself in a scenario where nothing exists.A blank slate.Gradually things will fill up in most literal sense in both science and religion .however the path of spirituality and attaining eternal bliss will certainly not be consistent with our current ordeal.thus now creating again a different irrational list of to dos.
Here where the definition of religion changes , so will our spiritual sense but Science shall prevail unadulterated.
However the fact that both religion and science will evolve again signifies humans delusion and consistent denial of the rational over the irrational.
For me science is my religion and I shall blindly follow its doctrine to attain spirituality through my consistent act of rationalizing the irrational.
Personally I feel religion and science are not much different, if you look at ancient Indian way of life then you realize that religion is a way of making everyone do things that they won't normally do. For instance we human beings need some structure to our lives, and the universe is balanced when there is a structure, of course there will be some outliers, but they after all are the ones who keep the balance together.
I would not like to be a part of a world where there is no religion or science, the terms can really be interchangeable.
So even if in some case we do start a civilization with no science or religion, then I believe that someone or the other will come up with a way to live life, then others will realize that this someone is telling the truth and instead of reinventing the wheel they will follow that person, which is basically our modern religions all over again, after the person dies, someone out of his ardent followers will take his place, then thousands of years later after science has grown they will realize that our religions are outdated, and then they will debate as to which one is right and which one is wrong.
It is the cycle of life all over again.

A fantasy world?

Looking at what we see on television, these days, I can understand your comment. However, in my humble opinion, fanatics would not be compelled to violence in the name of their gods, if they were afforded decent education.
Man tends to fabricate beliefs to serve a purpose. The situation overseas is based upon an agenda, playing to the uneducated masses. Provide solid educations, and you provide people an opportunity to think for themselves. Without good, decent education, there can be no peace in this world.
@Kathyi partly agree with you, but then again good balances the evil, so no matter what evil will exist and providing education to everyone won't happen any time soon, it's the ideal scenario, utopia.
It always sounds to me like utopia is man's last challenge. So, if it is, what happens to us after meeting our last challenge? Or, are there more challenges after reaching utopia?
@Ron man is trying hard to bring in utopia but it won't ever come, because it is utopia, it exists in the ideal world, and ideal isn't real
As senseless as this question is, the answer is they need each other. But if you must choose i would gladly pick a world without Religion.
Actually, I don't believe I'd want to live in a world that didn't have both. They both have their values and their drawbacks.Anybody who would answer without science is laughable at best. How would a world without science have ever advanced beyond the caveman era? Even the use of fire was advanced technology at some point in time. Let alone the computers we're having this discussion on.
Same for without religion. How far would man have come without a belief that something exists after this life? Or, that anything could be greater than one's self?
