Brenda Patterson | 9 comments What books have you read that have left you angry...... one that comes to mind with me is Girls like You by Paul Sheehan. Its about the six brothers from Sydney who were tried for gang rape of young girls. The court case was a real eye opener on how defense lawyers and the justice system will bend over backwards to protect perpetrators , the lawyers particularly will go to just about any extreme to get their clients free and back on the streets again, preying on young women!
The brothers have no compunction on dragging out the case for as long as they can, playing on loss of memory, or anything else that they can think of, and there is no remorse.
If you like true crime this a top read.....but I don't recommend it if you have high blood pressure!
Cheers Brenda P

Brenda Patterson | 9 comments Yes, for sure....particularly if you hate any type of injustice .It is the absolute arrogance of the brothers and the belief that they can rape Australian girls with impunity that leaves me infuriated....that and the dirty tricks the lawyers use.

Just reading the synopsis made me want to throw up — and I agree that the Australian judicial system is way overdue for an overhaul.

But I feel I should add that in March this year, Paul Sheehan, the author of the book being discussed here, was suspended from his position at the Sydney Morning Herald after the paper published an unsubstantiated story he wrote about a woman named "Louise" who claimed that she had been raped and beaten by Middle Eastern men.

Putting aside our feelings about the subject matter, it appears that Paul Sheehan is lacking the credibility one would expect from a senior journalist/investigative reporter covering such inflamatory issues.

Brenda Patterson | 9 comments I didn't know about his suspension, but unsubstantiated means to me not that it didn't happen, but there is no proof that it did. Also I feel the SMH editor should have checked this before publishing, which is probably why he was suspended rather than dismissed.
However, the subject perpetrators of this book were found guilty and jailed, obviously enough proof was found for incarceration, and court papers are there for anyone who wishes to question the authors credibility on the case.

Stef Rozitis Today Will Be Different leaves me angry and frustrated, possibly partly in light of #SaveOzStories which makes me wonder why we so assiduously import and market second-rate "product" from US? When we ought to be supporting aussie writers and publishers better.

But also because of the awfully shallow world-view. My review if anyone cares: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
