Anita Pomerantz | 9311 comments I was seriously close to giving this book five stars. It's just very hard to earn five stars with short stories because inevitably there will be one or two you don't like, but these were very good.

This collection has ten stories, and I whipped through them. They all made me think.

My personal favorite was the Semplica Girl Diaries. Set in the future, the protagonist - - a lower middle class family man - - wins the daily lottery and sets about purchasing the status symbol of the times to place in his yard. Unfortunately, the status symbol involves immigrants who place themselves into what could best be described as indentured servitude. A fascinating social commentary on the whole concept of "keeping up with the Joneses" that touches on a number of topical subjects.

The other one that really gripped me was Puppy. A poor, but well intentioned mom, needs to find a home for a farm puppy before her domineering husband comes home to dispose of it.

All of the stories are a little dark, sometimes edgy, often with a futuristic feel to them (if not outright set in the future). I actually found the first story the hardest to "get into" although it was also excellent. But after that, each story was very engaging, and I had to pause between them to think about them.

Great book. Highly recommend giving it a try! Also think this would be an excellent book club book!

Susie I'm feeling compelled to add this despite not usually enjoying short stories. You had me at dark!

I would love to hear your take on some of the specific stories! I know some of these you will think are very good . . .

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments I remember adding this book to my TBR back when it came out, but I never got to it. Not sure it is my cup of tea but I am glad you enjoyed it and great review!

Sara (mootastic1) | 770 comments This sounds right up my alley. Dark, short stories (still not sure how I managed to fall in love with them over the past couple years), you liked it; this has all the makings of a hit for me.

Anita Pomerantz | 9311 comments I would be very surprised, Sara, if this wasn't at least 4 stars for you. Hope you get to it some day!
