Kelly Green Hicks (kelly's bookish world) September is almost over, so it's probably time to plan our next month's reads. The categories are:

1. A book from your least favorite genre.
2. A book about an evil person.
3. A book with a lion, a witch, or a wardrobe.
4. A book from the Rory Gilmore reading challenge http://www.listchallenges.com/rory-gi...

Preliminary plan...

1. A book from your least favorite genre: (Amish romance) The Stubborn Father (Dude on the cover looks like Dwight Schrute, which may engender some amusement.)

2. A book about an evil person: 7 Days In Ohio: Trump, The Gathering Of The Juggalos And The Summer Everything Went Insane (Trump AND Juggalos!)

3. A book with a lion, a witch, or a wardrobe: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (The first one only took over 16 years to complete, so here's hoping this one goes faster.)

4. A book from the Rory Gilmore challenge: High Fidelity

message 4: by Sara (new)

Sara Kreps currently thinking:
1. old possum's book of practical cats (poetry).
2. divider-in-chief (obama).
3. chronicles of chrestomancy.
4. seabiscuit.

message 5: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Johnson Most of my choices seem to be in honor of a Halloweenish month:

1. Least favorite genre-something in the thriller or horror vein (if I can find a tame-ish option. Lol).
2. Rory Gilmore-Time Traveler's Wife
3. Evil person-Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
4. Something by Paula Brackston (witch is in every title)

I had no idea what the Rory Gilmore challenge was. I never watched Gilmore Girls. But checked out the list, and I have read 99 of the books/plays/poetry. Pretty good.

And I love Flowers for Algernon. Can't wait to hear your thoughts. Having a child with a intellectual disability definitely CHANGED my thoughts on the novel

Barbara (kanddmom) There are several genres that I really don't like. Difficult to pick which is my least favorite. But since I have to read Inner Circle for my other book club, let's go with that. I love horror. I love mysteries. I even like true crime stories. Especially like psychological thrillers. Definitely NOT a fan of political thrillers

Least fav genre: The Inner Circle
Rory Gilmore list: Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America
Book with a lion, a witch, etc: Death of a Witch

You could join me in the hell that is Amish romance!

Katie O’Reilly Hm, least favorite genre. Probably a slasher/scary book, book about horses, or Christian romance. So I guess I will try to find a horse book unless I can find an amusing enough looking Christian romance.

Barbara (kanddmom) Monkey Paul wrote: "You could join me in the hell that is Amish romance!"

No. I don't think I could ever finish one of those books.

message 11: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Johnson Barbara-I read Nickeled & Dimed years ago. It's a worthy discussion. Good choice. I was surprised how many Rory books I've read. And many I will never read. :)

message 12: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Johnson Paul-it's ironic that you read about actual hellish things in many books. But Amish hell is pbly an apt description. That is such a specific sub-genre. I can't read them. :/

message 13: by Katie O’Reilly (new)

Katie O’Reilly OK, looks like I am going to pick "Sad Books" as my least favorite genre and going to be reading *spoiler* Doomsday Book by Connie Willis, which is time-traveling sci-fi.

message 14: by Sara (new)

Sara Kreps Changing my last favorite to informational non-fiction: just my type.
Witch has been changed to all together dead.

message 15: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Johnson Ha! Sad books is a genre? Love it!

message 16: by Sara (new)

Sara Kreps Looking at the expanded list of genres on goodreads, anything you want can be a genre.

1. BOOK WITH A LION, WITCH, OR WARDROBE: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Same caliber as the 1st book. The series seems to find its footing in the 3rd book.)

2. BOOK ABOUT AN EVIL PERSON: Nixon's First Cover-up: The Religious Life of a Quaker President (A little too esoteric in its coverage of Quakerism, but still a pretty good book on an unexplored facet of Nixon.)

3. BOOK FROM RORY GILMORE READING CHALLENGE: High Fidelity (Good tale about music/ pop culture nerd's failed romances. Completely un-relatable, of course!)

4. BOOK FROM LEAST FAVORITE GENRE (AMISH ROMANCE): The Stubborn Father (How have I neglected this genre!? Millionaire Amish patriarch Dwight Schrute [where an Amish gets millions of dollars is anyone's guess] builds a tree house in honor of his dead wife, gripes about his heathen son, and enjoys the company of his deaf sister and middle-aged children. Can't wait to see how he's resurrected after being struck by lightning!)

I LOVED Just my Type!!!!

I have read other titles by Ehrenreich. I like her work.

message 20: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (kanddmom) Paul, why did you change your "evil" book? The first one sounded very interesting.

Sara Kreps Barbara wrote: "Sara wrote: "Changing my last favorite to informational non-fiction: just my type.

Just my type was good, that's just not the sort of book I usually read. Had to do it in hard copy though; tried listening to it about a year ago and could tell that just wasn't going to work.

message 22: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Johnson Completed in the nick of time.
1. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children-a few surprises but not too scary. It was no Lois Lowry or Neil Gaimon.
2. The Time Traveler's Wife-Waaaay too long. No major plot drive. I was able to follow the character/narrative changes, Gina, but it fell very flat for me.
3. Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde-I'm always disappointed by these classic horror books. Not super scary or engaging.
4. The Winter Witch-except for the British audio narrator, very disappointing. A few witch powers reminiscent of Harry Potter, but in no way near as good.

October is Halloween. We're all entitled to one good scare, aka crappy books!

And while the juggalo book looked intriguing, it's a Kindle exclusive and I can't find my Kindle. :(
