Elizabeth (Alaska) We all do what we can, and sometimes we notice something special along the way: number of books added, cracking the top librarians list, getting a search term through a barrier.

Post your milestone here - you deserve a high five!

Elizabeth (Alaska) The Romance topic tags in titles thread has included some very supportive librarians in what must be a very challenging project. Recently, a milestone was reached: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

High fives.

Dobby (dobby0390) | 8076 comments A thread I've been watching in awe is Please help me add all 300+ of these books into the database. Elizabeth (Alaska) has taken on the project of adding these Chinese-language books.

High fives to you, Elizabeth (Alaska)!

Lobstergirl Does this really need to be sticky?

message 5: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Wildflower | 11 comments I think there are good reasons for it to be sticky, as positivity often gets a back seat, Problems are much more likely to get attention.
Hopefully the thread will generate more positive milestones to be noticed if it is highly visible :-)

Carol, She's so Novel ꧁꧂ | 2608 comments & Elizabeth (op in this thread) has cleaned up the Next Generation Indie awards. :)

Anna Renault | 4 comments Milestones: I've just published book #20. I've been on & off Goodreads but have not figured out what to do and how to make good use of it. Is there a tutorial or a librarian/volunteer willing to help me get my books here? THANKS!

message 17: by Abcdarian (last edited Jan 20, 2017 06:40AM) (new)

Abcdarian | 26579 comments Anna, this is a thread for librarian edit milestones; please start a new topic next time.

This is the author profile for your name: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
In order to claim it, fill in this form: https://www.goodreads.com/author/conf...
When it goes through it will merge with your current reader profile.

There is information on Goodread's author program here: https://www.goodreads.com/author/program
and an Author Feedback Group here: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

Anna, this is not the correct thread for your request. This thread is intended for librarian editing milestones, as noted in Message 1.

That said, you can claim your author profile by submitting this request to join the Author Program. (That's the Is this you? Let us know link at the bottom of the profile page.) After the staff has completed their review, they will upgrade your current reader profile to an author account and send you an email confirmation. This might take a few business days, depending on staff workload, so please be patient.

Once your claim is processed, you will be able to make some changes to your books, including combining different editions of the same book. You'll then also have the ability to choose which edition will be the default—that is, the one that comes up in searches by title and shows on your author profile.

You can find more information on the Author Program here.

Zaphirenia | 102 comments From time to time I search for classic ancient Greek literature spelled wrong (there are countless wrongly spelled titles and authors). Also, the names of the authors are often in Greek, so I change them in English in order to be combined.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Zaphirenia wrote: "Also, the names of the authors are often in Greek, so I change them in English in order to be combined. "

Are you changing the Greek name or simple putting the English name in first position?

I put the English name in first position so I can combine them. Is that ok?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Zaphirenia wrote: "I put the English name in first position so I can combine them. Is that ok? "

Perfect! I just wanted to verify that you weren't actually changing the Greek name to the English one, but adding the English one to first position, and putting the Greek one second.

Yes! Some Greek works had been really messed up (I just finished Aristotle) - a lot of them were combined without being the same work.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thanks for working on the entries in Greek!

message 29: by ☕ Lachgas ♿ (last edited Feb 02, 2017 01:37PM) (new)

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments Spent the last day with "teneues" and several alternative ways of the "author" name.
Now the few hundreds of calenders/journals of them are nabed and the few real books do have authors (except a few where I couldn't find one).
And there's only one "teneues" now.
Yeah! (From more than 14 pages to not a full one ... until next year's calenders came out I assume)

Any other ideas for naming search terms/authors?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Lachgas wrote: "Any other ideas for naming search terms/authors? "

It feels so good to finish such a project!

As to your final question - have you looked in the Looking for a Project folder?

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments Yeah I did and started with some, but my pc is still broken and the started ones (making america and Paul summers) are a bit fizzy on the tablet (more tabs to work with, more clicking). Found out that nabing is the compromise which is OK for me as long as the pc is out of order.
But will look if there are some older unfinished ones.

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments The "romantic" crap in titles project (tried some with romantic suspense but uh was too "hot" ehm annoying) brought me to the Thriller...which is more my piece of cake.
Wiped out "gripping thriller" more than 250 useless explanations in titles gone now (including some combining, deleting tons of praise...). (Don't know why this 2 books don't disappear).

message 33: by Krazykiwi (new)

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments Nice one Lachgas!

I am also on a break from the romance titles, so I have been working on Penguin Classics.

https://www.goodreads.com/search?page...
- It had 87 pages of results when I started on it, a month ago. And now it's got 2, plus a page full of things that are fixed, but still show in the search results for no good reason.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Krazykiwi wrote: "It had 87 pages of results when I started on it, a month ago. And now it's got 2, "

Oh, well done! Double well done!

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments Wow well done krazykiwi! *applause*
This non disappearing thing affects some of the former "teneues" books for over a month now ... they still appear in a search with "teneues" although that's not their author anymore for more than a month ... weird thing.

got rid of the "psychothriller" (that seems to be more a german term) (about 300 results only), tried the "Kriminalroman" and today I did the few "psycho thriller".
tried "psychological thriller" but was a bit annoyed of the dozens of books of Matthew S, Soul S, whatever S which all look quite similar but have different titles and tons of nonsens in the title (+ ton of tags in the description) on the first pages so took a break (and got a bit confused of all these "collections" and their quite smiliar descriptions)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Lachgas wrote: "got rid of the "psychothriller" (that seems to be more a german term) (about 300 results only), tried the "Kriminalroman" and today I did the few "psycho thriller"."

you're getting creative! keep it up!

I am still working on Dodo Press - I have hopes of seeing fewer than 5000 results before long.

message 37: by Krazykiwi (new)

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments Yeah, there are a few on that penguin classics search that just won't go away. Funny thing is, one of them never did have Penguin Classics anywhere near it, there's a few editions but all from one publisher, part of a commissioned series!

I think your task is more impressive than mine. Most of the penguin ones fell into two kinds: Imported by the Penguin bot, so just needed title fixing, or not penguin books at all - so just needed title fixing :) There was very little combining/fixing of other things to be done.

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments It's a bit surprising for me how many GR Authors don't combine their books (if I were they I would do that just because it's nicer ...)

oh and I got the search for "german edition" (which don't bring up only those but also french etc) under 50.000 :D (yeah, was my first target)
Got my PC back from repairing so now it's all a bit easier than on the tabet.
And if I'm bored with deleting things out of titles I'm going for authors especially "Mr"... but that get's annoying if I get a lot GR authors in a row and can't merge them and ooooor ... :)) (had one with a common name were the first 4 spaces profiles were not possible) But I'm not sure if I'll ever finish the "mr A" guys (not so easy to see the progress there, but it's quite a good feeling moving the books to their proper authors)

Yeah, I got really creative ... read somewhere in the forum from the possibility to use the "add author" of the forum for a good search for author names and thought "oh well ... nice idea, there will be many missing periods and slightly wrong author names"

message 39: by Dobby (new)

Dobby (dobby0390) | 8076 comments Wow! You've both done some incredible and very satisfying work. Kudos to you both!

Lachgas, I empathize with your computer woes and know you must be thrilled to have your PC back. I just got my computer up and running again; after yet another failure, I had to give up and buy a new one. Still getting the details configured, but it's faster and I hope will be more reliable.

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments Finally - the "Mr a" authors are cleaned up (at the moment only 3 left which must be merged in their GR author by staff).
That will last only minutes but - yeah! After weeks of searching, combining and author merging I nearly lost hope to reach that point at least once :D

Elizabeth (Alaska) Lachgas wrote: "Finally - the "Mr a" authors are cleaned up (at the moment only 3 left which must be merged in their GR author by staff).

message 42: by Zaphirenia (new)

Zaphirenia | 102 comments Well... Aristotle would be very proud of me :P
I have done the best I could, demerged editions coming from different books and merged what should be merged. I'll keep checking from time to time because new editions seem to appear regularly. Only problem the book titled "ethics" because I have no way to verify whether all these editions contain all three books of ethics of Aristotle or two of them, etc. I hope to finish up Plato too soon.

message 43: by Emy (new)

Emy (emypt) | 5037 comments Fantastic Zaphirenia! I've started and given up on those a number of times...

If you're in those records, can you keep track of editions that need variant author spellings added? (Aristotle/Plato as primary and then cover version as secondary author, etc.)

message 44: by Zaphirenia (new)

Zaphirenia | 102 comments Hi Emy, yeah, it's a tough project but I am quite familiar with the ancient Greek works so I thought I'd give it a try. I'll also try what you're suggesting. I've fixed all Greek editions, which is easy for me (for the obvious reason that I am Greek) but I will try to also keep track of other editions.

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments well done zaphirenia!

Elizabeth (Alaska) Oh, excellent, Zaphirenia!

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments "Mr B" authors are finished (exept Mr Benton Williams, there's a librarian note on it that it's needed for fixing something)

message 48: by Dobby (new)

Dobby (dobby0390) | 8076 comments Excellent job, Lachgas! That's quite impressive.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Lachgas, thanks for keeping after these.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I finally have one to report! As of this minute "Dover Thrift" in the title has been cleared. (Imports may change this, I'm afraid I'll have to keep an eye on it.)
