Liza Perrat (httpwwwgoodreadscomlizaperrat) Hi everyone,
I've been asked to write a piece (with Aussie slant) for a German book blog that is reaching out to English-speaking readers. I would appreciate your recommendations on lesser-known Aussie authors, with novels set in Australia. I know the biggies, and will mention them, of course. Also, can you please let me know if it's ok to quote you (using only your GR name) with your recommendation? Thanks a lot. Cheers, Liza

Oh, if you could also just write a few words, one sentence would die, as to why you liked it. Thx.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 10065 comments Liza, without knowing what you consider the biggies...it's hard to know what else to recommend.
Kerry Greenwood's Phryne Fisher series, clever, funny. local feel
Kerry Greenwood's Corinna Chapman series, ditto
Gabrielle Lord, excellent crime fiction in a local setting
Dianne Blacklock, Ber Carroll, Liane Moriarty, Liz Byrski, Lisa Heidke all what I call thinking chicklit in a local setting
I'm sure you've thought of Peter Corris & Garry Disher, both excellent crime fiction in a local setting (it's always nice to recognise places in a novel, which is what made Ashley Hay's The Railwayman's Wife so appealing)
Marele Day's Claudia Valentine series, Sydney-based with a great female lead
Richard Flanagan, Kate Grenville, Derek Hansen,
Toni Jordan, quirky, funny, local
Inga Simpson's Mr Wigg a lovely snapshot of 1970's country NSW

Thanks so much, Marianne, all wonderful recommendations. I was thinking of the likes of Kate Grenville and Peter Carey as "biggies". Oh yes, how could I not include The Railwayman's Daughter, since Thirroul was one of my childhood stamping grounds! Thanks again.

Sally906 | 118 comments Go and have a look at our list of Australian Authors here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

A huge resource.

I wouldn't be game to name names as I am sure someone I love and am friends with may slip my mind and I'd be in deep strife :)

Then again they may get upset if I named them as little known :)

Go look at the list much easier on my mental stress :)

Thanks, Sally, that's a great list. I would prefer books that I know have been read by readers in this group though, and subsequently recommended.

C.A. Larmer (calarmer) As a mystery writer I can't go past Aussie paramedic-turned-author Katherine HowellKatherine Howell. Always a thrill ride from start to finish.

Carolyn | 10003 comments I agree with Marianne that Mr Wigg by Inga Simpson, set in farming country NSW is a must and, if you don't already have them on your list, you should have a look at the wonderful The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion, set in Melbourne and the beautiful The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman set in south west WA.

Dina Roberts | 91 comments The World Beneath by Cate Kennedy-takes place in Tasmania

Candy Takes place in Sydney. About heroin addiction

Sorry Takes place in Western Australia.

Claire McNab writes lesbian mysterious. I think they take place in Sydney.

Janette Turner Hospital is a great Aussie author, but I can't remember which of her books take place in Australia.

A Fraction of the Whole Love this book, though can't remember it enough to remember how much of it takes place in Australia. But Aussie author.

The Faraday Girls and other books by Monica McInerney. She writes chick-lit type stuff.

The Slap A modern classic.

My favorites: The Moriarty sisters...Jaclyn and Liane
