The Jim Thorpe Train station was built in 1888 as the Central Railroad of New Jersey Station. It was designed in the Queen Anne style and included a second building, called the Mauch Chunk Freight House. The Freight House was used by train crews as a bunker and locker room. It was torn down when the Central Railroad of New Jersey left Jim Thorpe.
The railroad became the Lehigh Valley Railroad and fell into Asa Packer's control. By the time of his death, the railroad extended into Easton and New York State.
