Lena_makridina | 33 comments There are at least three of them (The Butterfly Garden ) by different authors.
The Sword of Shannara But it's dense maddening and 700 pages long. On the other hand it's a complete book. Let's not take series guys.
As I see it we can choose any first novel by any author we want and maybe love.

That's fair.I seem to recall a novel that was a standalone titled "Stranger with my face"by Lois Duncan
Which I was SUPPOSED to read in High school but never actually read. From what I remember it was pretty awful. interesting premise, but poorly done.

I actually don't mind doing series, as long as it fits a certain criteria.
A.k.a - We use book One (like the case of the selection) I assure you well written Book One's do not end as abruptly as that one did lol. Sword of Shannara is a good example of that.

OR, it's a non-serialized series. For example, The Dresden Files, for the most part you can pick up any of the first 5-6 books, and you won't be lost. There is an underlying plot that goes through all the books telling an over-arching story, but Butcher does a great job quickly getting you up to speed on ONLY the details you need to know to get through the specific book your reading, and all of the books tell their own complete three act story.

:P
Now that being said, I've been pretty flustered this month (evident from my lack of videos I'm sure :P) I haven't put a lot of thought into next months pick, but Britt, you tossed out the idea of At The Mountain of Madness, and I love that idea.

I'm such a huge fan of Lovecraft's world and mythos, but haven't had the best experience trying to read his actual writing, so I'd be down for Mountains of Madness, (plus it's pretty short if I recall, Novella length.) - and if you know much about Lovecraft as a person one could understand why reading his work wouldn't be preferred, since he's been noted as terribly homophobic/sexist.

My interpretation from what I know is that it was moreso that he was just a terrified young man who was scared of anything he didn't understand, that's where his fiction came from. And living in a time where sexual orientation was very queer (by defintion) and the Women's Suffrage movement began and ramped up during his lifetime, so yeah, I think these negative views on him were due to his fear, not some deep seated hatred he bore. ... annnyway.. lol

Of course, I was always intending at some point in my life to getting back to sword of shannara, especially after finding tolkien as a kid and being told that it's basically the same story, heh I wanna see what kind of similarities/difference I can find.

Britt, I like your idea of checking out "Worst of the year" lists though, that's genuis. I'll definitely be doing that to come up with some nominations in Dec. :)

So I'm thinking a toss up between
Mountains Of Madness
Sword Of Shannara
for me.

I've never read anything by Lovecraft.
I just feel like I need to take a short break from YA love triangle thing. I'll be in shape in a month or so:)

I read it with the hopes that I could mock the hell out of it. And then I ACTUALLY fell in love with it. The writing style I think is what really sells this story.- But I mean. I also really like the whole "Paranormal" element of the story. Psycic's and tarot have always interested me (Tho I don't necessarily BELIEVE in them. I dunno it's fun.) I've firmly believed my house has always been haunted so that culd have something to do with my love for this. And ya know. Ronan is my spirit animal. I related to him really strongly, and just fell in love with all the characters as the series progressed. I think it's at least worth a TRY. It's my new fave, but you know that cause you watch all my videos hahahah
