Here are your November 2016 Challenges!

RULES

** Books DO NOT all have to be mysteries. You can use any genres.

** A book can only be used once for this challenge, but can be used for other challenges (Seasonal, World Trip, Ultimate, etc.).

** You DO NOT have to choose books in advance, and can change your mind at any time if you do.

** Do as many as you are able and have fun!

1. Nov 1 is All Saint's Day and Nov 2 is All Soul's Day — Read a book with a scene set in a cemetery or graveyard, or that has a tombstone, ghost or skeleton on the cover.

2. November is National Novel Writing Month, November 5 is Book Lovers Day and November 8 Young Readers Day — Read a book ABOUT books. That could involve a bookstore, library, Bookmobile, restorer, collector, writer, or book group — or even the novel Fahrenheit 451 — just so long as it revolves around books.

3. Nov 10 is Forget-Me-Not Day and USMC Day (Marine Corps birthday), and Nov 11 is Veteran's/Remembrance Day — Read a book set during a war, or that features a veteran or someone currently serving their country's military. (Suggested authors include Kate Collins, Anne Perry, Jacqueline Winspear and Jasper Fforde.)

4. Nov 17 is World Peace Day — Read a book set in a country other than your own.

5. Nov 28 is Red Planet Day . . . how appropriate, since Mars is in the news so frequently these days — Read a book with a mostly red cover, or — for those who like to read across genres — a book set on another planet or that features an alien.

Have fun!

Gary Sundell | 2274 comments I am in for November. So do I reread A Princess of Mars by Burroughs or The Martian Chronicles by Bradbury for number 5. I haven't read either since high school. For number 3 a Peter Wimsey book would do as well, Peter suffers from shell shock or in this day it would called post traumatic stress disorder from his time serving in WW I.

5/5

3. Nov 10 is Forget-Me-Not Day and USMC Day (Marine Corps birthday), and Nov 11 is Veteran's Day — Read a book set during a war, or that features a veteran or someone serving their country. War Against the Mafia (The Executioner, #1) by Don Pendleton War Against the Mafia by Don Pendleton Set during the Vietnam War, Mack Bolan is a highly decorated sharpshooter who comes home and applies his skills to taking down the Mob that was responsible for the death of his parents and sister and the severe wounding of his brother. Entirely up to you -- or you could read The Martian by Andy Weir or The War of the Worlds by HG Wells. '-D

"For number 3 a Peter Wimsey book would do as well, Peter suffers from shell shock or in this day it would called post traumatic stress disorder from his time serving in WW I. ."

Thanks for the suggestion! I've only read Whose Body? and that wasn't mentioned in that one.

A ghost is a ghost, right? There is a book in Leann Sweeney's Cats in Trouble series that has a ghost cat in it that would also work. I believe it's The Cat, the Mill and the Murder.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 423 comments I've got something for Options 1-2 and 4-5, which fit with another challenge I'm doing, but I'm struggling for #3, so I have a quick question. Could All the President's Men squeeze in for #3? After all, the Watergate cover-up definitely featured a number of public servants - they were just all as crooked as a three-dollar note! To add to the possibilities, Bob Woodward, one of the authors, was a Navy Veteran, and while also a bit of a stretch perhaps, the book is about him and Bernstein breaking the scandal.

We're actually looking for a veteran or someone currently serving in the military/war to coincide with Veteran's/Remembrance Day and the USMC birthday.

Ah well. I'm sure I'll come up with something else! OOI, you mention Kate Collins in the task description. So would any of the flower shop mysteries work (I've had Mum's the Word on my list for a while), or is it specific ones? Otherwise I might take your Lord Peter Wimsey tip, as if I remember, Lord Peter and Bunter met in WWI - I think Bunter was Lord Peter's batman as well.

Kristy 1.

Irene Sauman | 164 comments I love reading challenges because they push you out of your comfort zone and you find new authors. Here are my choices to be read on kindle, or borrowed from my library on kobo:
1 - Scene set in cemetery or graveyard: Graveyard Shift by Angela Roquet. This is the first in what looks like an interesting series.
2 - A book about books: The Agatha Christie Book Club by C.A. Larmer - READ
3 - War or military: The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy. I have read or seen the movie many years ago and want to revisit.
4 - Set in another country, England: Cold Coffin by Erica Quest (aka Nancy Buckingham)
5 - Mostly red cover: Death of a Toy Soldier by Barbara Early. READ
Mmmh - perhaps not so much out of my comfort zone after all. Mysteries do predominate here.

According to the book description, that is supposed to be a reconstruction of an ancient building including some stones, so it's unlikely a grave.

What Julesy said -- ruins of a building, not a graveyard. Sorry!

Monica Ferris' lead character in her Needlecraft series, Betsy Devonshire, is a U.S. Navy veteran, and , happily, a heck of a sleuth.

Lacey (she2beautiful) | 13659 comments Just finished my first book for this challenge:

Black Cat Crossing by Kay Finch (The main character is a mystery writer.)

I really enjoyed my first book for this challenge and I've started on my second, Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout for the fifth part of this challenge since the main character is an alien.

Irene Sauman | 164 comments I have finished No. 2 - The Agatha Christie Book Club by C.A. Larmer. Enjoyed this one, tho if you know the story of Agatha Christie you will work out what has happened very quickly, but of course, there was no murder involved in her real life. I would read others in this series.
No. 5 - Death of a Toy Soldier by Barbara Early. A good plot but I didn't warm to the characters and setting.
