Variant Edition Comics & Culture discussion

Hey all! I want to throw this one out there - what was the last comic or prose novel that knocked you over... in a good way?

And you know what? Same question, but for TV and movies. There's so much out there, and with running the shop, we all could use some good pop culture recommendations for our, uh... "spare time"!

I think this is obvious for tv... Stranger Things. Boom.

Comics wise... hmmm... Thinking

Children's books - Journey, Quest and Return by Aaron Becker

Stranger Things did a lot for me. Hell, it's a good part of the reason I picked up the D&D books to run some games.

I also really liked Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey. Very engaging story that satisfied an itch for something kind of like the Battlestar Galactica reboot.

I also of course, really loved A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab. Nice twists on some classic ideas, with some diverse and interesting characters.

Now this is an older title in my 'holy crap that was good', but the Atrocity Archives by Charles Stross was an amazing book for me to experience. Dry British humor, some mysterious occult happenings and just enough Lovecraft to really drag me in. A really great read.

Awesome. Other than Cursed Pirate Girl and A Darker Shade of Magic (which I second) this list is filled with things that I need to check out! :)

Novel: I recently read The Fireman by Joe Hill and it was absolutely breathtaking. I recommend it to everyone.

Graphic novel: My hubby convinced me to read The Vision Vol. 1: Little Worse Than A Man, and I'm glad he did. I don't generally enjoy superhero comics (with Wonder Woman and Aquaman being the exceptions), but I loved the story of Vision trying to live a normal life.

TV: Westworld! Omg how crazy amazing is this show?!

Movies: I actually didn't hate Z-Men Apocalypse. Does that make me a bad person?

(I don't know why autocorrect changed X-Men to Z-Men, but I can't edit it and I'm embarrassed.)

Recently started the Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman, and it's just so good. Light and fluffy, but still really clever so you don't feel like you're OD'ing your brain on junk food.

Ah, we knew what you meant! I haven't checked that out myself, but someone will be loaning us a Blu-Ray soon here, so that will change.

And THE VISION is probably the best superhero books this year, IMO.

Westworld is definitely something I need to jump in on.

I could not agree more, I'm glad we are getting some bonkers, thought provoking sci fi on tv

Also The Good Place has been incredible so far. Dealing with interesting ethical issues with a top notch cast, would highly recommend
