Gavin Mraz Messenger is a science fiction book. I first started reading Messenger because I read The Giver back in 8th grade then last year I read Gathering Blues so this year i wanted to read the third book in the series. Reading this book i learned how everything in the past two books work with each other and how the endings make sense. Although this book is great and would recommend it to everyone but it's the third book a series so it unless you've read the other two books this one would make no sense but that aside it has a great plot with some really great characters that work so well together so the book is extremely enjoyable despite some sadder tones throughout it.

The setting of Messenger is in one of the many communities with this one being referred to only as “Village”. The protagonists are Matty in which the book focuses around with him being the point of view you see things from who is as a young child came to the village for safety from his old community where he was abused and treated like nothing, the second protagonist is Kira the Protagonist in Gathering Blues in this book she is seen as Matty’s closest friend and the person whose safety matters the most, and the last protagonist is Jonas who is the original protagonist from the first book but in this book he is seen more as a wise mentor to Matty and Kira as all the protagonists have special “gifts” that allow them to almost distort the world around them. The antagonist is more the idea of corruption in their society and how it is drastically changing the world around them. The main conflict is that the entrance to the village being the forest is not only starting to violently over grow but the villagers are getting very irritable and trying to close the entrance with a wall so Matty and Jonas must find a way to get Kira into the village before she is completely unable to.

I believe the theme of this book is overcoming change, because throughout the book it put emphasis on how the village used to be but now all of a sudden outsiders aren't accepted, people are a lot angrier, or that the forest is becoming incredible hostile to people. During the book Matty has to make multiple though decision due to his gift and he has to come to terms with all the change around him and that he can't fix everything for the better, as the book goes on the change becomes more difficult to deal with as some of the nicest people become completely arrogant of other’s emotions and the entire basis of the village being to accept anyone in is disregarded and the protagonists are unable to do anything about it but sit and watch as they try to survive.
