Amy | 13407 comments I didn't love it either. Just starting the Children Act, of his.

Susie I'm so scared to read this! Lol!

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2615 comments This keeps on falling off and on my TBR! I'm like Susie I guess, scared to read it. I hate spending time on a book that just doesn't do it for me - life is too short!

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8091 comments Despised is a strong word. This is among my ten least favorite books of all time. I thought it was unnecessarily slow, deliberately repetitive, and utterly unengaging.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments I definitely didn't love it. I did not write a review, but I know it didn't meet my expectations.

Amy | 13407 comments I say this with softness and a twinkle in my eye. I am quite sure none of us lack any intellectual capacity. You have some pretty perceptive and thoughtful people in this group. Looks like I was one of the original people who said I didn’t care so much for this book. But since then I have read the Children Act and On Chesil Beach, and I was blown away by both. Particularly the latter. Man, can this guy write. His ability to articulate and express and explore the new wants of even the smallest of moments or thoughts is brilliant, Beautiful, and nuaunced. And sometimes even quite funny. Yes the man is brilliant. But this book was not one of my favorites of his. I think in general a person has to like both the writing and the content. Sometimes good writing ups a book whose content may not be one’s liking. But I wouldn’t discount the amazing range of thinking and appreciation and high-level capacity in this group, despite the fact that we sometimes disagree and find our opinions to differ. I think you’ve landed and are really lucky spot with some amazing folks. I look forward to your getting to know us and our getting to know you.

Hi Briony,

I believe you are new to PBT and we are glad to have you join us! I see that you rated this book 5 stars, and you are definitely in good company as many PBT members loved this book as well. However, many people did not and that is also a valuable—and valid—viewpoint.

At PBT we encourage everyone to express their views in a respectful manner and do not allow personal attacks on people such as stating that they do not have intellectual capabilities to understand or appreciate something. We all read much more than the average person and we all like different books. None of us lack the intelligence to grasp this book, it just did not resonate with some of us.

The admins thank you in advance for being more respectful of others in the future and sticking to discussing the books themselves and your personal reaction to them.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8091 comments Hi Paul,

I just wanted to let you know that, as a PBT Admin, I have deleted your post. In fairness, I have also deleted Briony's original post. I believe that "member" is a troll and posts on bad reviews of Atonement.

PBT does not condone being disrespectful of other people, either in a direct or passive aggressive manner.

We have many new members on PBT, which is great and we welcome everyone to participate in an engaging yet respectful manner with the critiques focused on the books themselves and not on other people.

Thank you for being mindful of this in the future.
