Kevin Park The book "Chinese Cinderella" is an autobiography by Adeline Yen Mah. In the book Chinese Cinderella, the protagonist Adeline Yen Mah is like a Cinderella. Ways that she is similar to the regular Cinderella is that when Adeline was a child she had a sister and a stepmother. Also, Adeline was like a cinderella when she was home and at school. At home, her stepmother would not leave Adeline alone and would constantly mistreat her. While in the classic Cinderella the stepsisters at the start of the story did not like Cinderella, in Chinese cinderella she had a family that liked her and supported her, but one member at one time started going against her and betraying her. Her eldest sister was the first to betray Adeline to get respect from Niang her stepmother and for a better life, later siblings followed as they also wanted a better life, because Niang would prosper the children that were hers and those who obeyed her. In a sense, both stories are similar because Cinderella and Adeline Yen Mah because they were both mistreated harshly by their stepmothers. Later in the story, Adeline tries to get back affection back. Her father was inconsiderate and forgot about Adeline, except for when she got and award. The story ends as she becomes a physician and gets married to get his father to be proud. I recommend this book if you love autobiographies with a Cinderellaesque type of story this is the book for you. I’d rate it a 5/5 because even though the storyline is very predictable and similar to Cinderella the story is still filled with Chinese culture and history. Overall the book is an enjoyable and interesting book with many events which will make the story never get boring.
