If you want to make some comments or share some thoughts that are not associated with any particular chapter, this might be a good place to start.

Jennifer Young | 2 comments I just want to thank you guys for starting this group. I have had this book for awhile. Looking forward to some encouragement to complete the book.

You're welcome. As we begin the book club, I have some questions: what do you all think about when you hear the terms "active" reader and "passive" reader? If you view yourself as an active reader, what are some things you do to promote activity? Have you always been an active reader or did someone in particular introduce you to this practice?

Brandy Ferrell | 3 comments I have to get a hard-copy of a book and thoroughly mark up the margins with my thoughts as I read. It helps me to actively think and remember what I've read. I've used this technique from the time I was introduced to it by the only teacher that really taught me how to think before college: My 11th grade AP English Teacher.

Robin Johnson | 3 comments I like to take notes while reading...it helps me stay focused. I learned a lot from the book "How to Read Slowly". Question for you all-understanding the problem our youth face in important, but how can we effectively teach them how to resist the world? I spent 3 years with my daughter in a debate group learning apologetics, and worked through "Understanding the Times" but when she went off to college, it all went out the window and she was easily swayed by 'friends' in her art and psych courses.

Shawne (shawneinfl) | 2 comments I struggle with the same thing Robin. I went through a similar situation with my oldest daughter. My conclusion is that it is a heart issue and that ultimately each person is responsible for their own path. It's the old adage "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink".

Robin Johnson | 3 comments Thanks for the reassurance. It's hard, but true...we can't make the decision for them. Just frustrating to see them make mistakes and not be able to help.

Patti Cromer | 1 comments Robin, Just keep the channels of communication open. It is difficult when our children make choices that we know are harmful, but they have to find their own way. Be reassured, however, that your teaching and training will not be in vain. Be patient with your daughter. Love her unconditionally, while speaking the truth when appropriate.
God will continue working in her life and heart. He is not finished with her yet.

So, how's everybody doing? Have you all finished chapter 1? ...Chapter 2? ...Dare I go for 3?

message 11: by Brandy (new)

Brandy Ferrell | 3 comments I'll be finishing Chapter 2 tonight! (I ended up getting sidetracked on finishing up another book and starting another one in the midst of reading this one!)

Shawne (shawneinfl) | 2 comments I gave away my original copy and am awaiting the arrival of a new copy from the CC bookstore. Hope they aren't on backorder.
