And here's my giant list of queer and trans Canadian authors. A lot of these authors have written multiple books but I'm only going to list either their latest or my favourite for brevities sake. I recommend you check out all of their work though.Ivan E. Coyote. I'm assuming quite a few people in this group are already familiar with Ivan's work. They're a storyteller and their books are collections of first person short stories. Their latest book is Tomboy Survival Guide.
Rae Spoon. Rae Spoon is another storyteller who writes first person short stories. Their first and only book out so far is First Spring Grass Fire.
Rae Spoon and Ivan Coyote also wrote a book together called Gender Failure.
Vivek Shraya is a poet, novelist, musician, picture book author and so much more. Her debut collection of poetry even this page is white was released this year.
Casey Plett writes short stories. Her only book so far is A Safe Girl to Love, a short story collection following a number of young trans women figuring their lives out.
Sina Queyras is a poet. Her collection Lemon Hound was really good and I need to read more of her work.
Amber Dawn is a poet, writer and performance artist. Her memoir/poetry collection How Poetry Saved My Life: A Hustler's Memoir is a beautiful and heartfelt read.
Emily Carroll is a cartoonist. Her graphic novel Through the Woods is an eerie collection of spooky stories with beautiful art.
Sarah Leavitt is a cartoonist. Her first book Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer's, My Mother, and Me is an autobiographical graphic memoir.
Meags Fitzgerald is a cartoonist. Her work includes Photobooth: A Biography, part biography, part history of photobooths.
Mariko Tamaki is a writer. She's written a college coming of age novel called (You) Set Me on Fire.
Jillian Tamaki is a writer and artist. She's the author of the excellent graphic novel Super Mutant Magic Academy
Jillian and Mariko Tamaki have also written Skim and This One Summer together, which are two really good graphic novels that I highly recommend.
And that's all for now. There's a bunch of authors I know of but haven't read yet so I'm wary of recommending them.
@Shvaugn - great list! i was researching to try and find some authors that were already on my bookshelf (I love the idea of trying to read as many as I can that I already have). Here are what I found:
Wayson Choy
Emma Donoghue - still excited to have met her twice this fall!!!
Emma Donoghue
Timothy Findley
Camilla Gibb - anyone who has not read the The Beauty of Humanity Movement needs to!! i have a signed copy of Sweetness in the Belly on my shelf from meeting her last fall
Helen Humphreys - have been lucky to meet her also and have a couple of TBR books
Ann Marie MacDonald
Zoe Whittall - Giller nominated author of The Best Kind of People
For a non-fiction book, I would recommend the father and son collaboration ofKevin Newman and Alex Newman All Out: A Father and Son Confront the Hard Truths That Made Them Better Men

More authors:Shani Mootoo
Farzana Doctor
Marnie Woodrow (I loved her novel Spelling Mississippi)
Shyam Selvadurai
Alberto Manguel
Dionne Brand
Oh wow, you guys have taught me some! I didn't know about Humphreys, Manguel, Whittal, or Gibb! Great -- lots more options from my "already own" pile!
Here is a link to a giveaway for some LGBTQ ebooks for free! You do have to give them an email but it seems like they won't share it. http://giveaway.riptidepublishing.com/Not Canadian authors, I don't think, possibly British as the link came from one of my UK connections.
Roller Girl by Vanessa North (f/f contemporary with a trans lead)
Lead Me Not by Ann Gallagher (inspirational m/m) [I think that means Christian]
Pickup Men by LC Chase (m/m cowboys)
When to Hold Them by GB Gordon (contemporary m/m)
@ Barbara - Monoceros definitely fits the bill. Not sure if you've read it or are planning to read it but it's a novel that seemed to be totally under the radar and despite being nominated for some awards, I don't think it ever got the readership it deserves.
I haven't read it yet. It is another on my to read shelf, well... my to read book wall, lol! I am trying to plan out my 2017 Bingo with books I have if possible.
The guy who wrote Fruit and his follow-up-Brian....is gay.Don Hannah-a not very well known east coast writer-his first
novel was lots of fun.
Sinclair Ross
Anthony Bidulka-a very fun mystery writer from Saskatoon
Wikipedia has a name only alphabetical listing of authors who are publically open about their sexuality. There are lots of excellent authors to choose from. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categor...
Casey the Canadian Lesbrarian is a great website resource. It's a blog that regular reviews books and other happenings and numerous links to interesting sites.
Casey, the blogger, focuses primarily on Canadian lesbian authors but in her "about me" section says "I am especially partial to writing which is queer, feminist, Canadian and/or written by women – the writing that this site is all about!" You'll find lots of links to authors and other related websites.
Here's the link to the authors' section:

check out the book nominations for the LAMBDA awards in the Book Contests and Awards section - 14 have Canadian connections!
somehow I've missed this thread entirely, but what a great list thanks Shvaugn for your synopsis of each. There's a few more that look interesting, and a few I've read and enjoyed.Michael Smith is a BC author is one I didn't notice on this list.
MOving this here from t'other thread:Hmm, just looked at Wikipedia's list of Canadian LGBTQ authors and was surprised to see Wayson Choy. Only surprised because I'm currently reading The Jade Peony for the Cross Canada challenge. I could now use this for the LGBTQ square in Bingo, too! (Oh, I just looked at my list, I've used Emma Donoghue for that square but no matter...someone else might like to use it, right?)
And as MJ pointed out to me there, this would also fit Bingo B2, a province I'd like to visit and indeed, I've got a trip booked to BC for November!
A list from CBC Books that may prove helpful for this bingo square. 12 Canadian books to read during Pride Month
From the Guardian: books that helped authors come out, including Canadian author (currently living in London, Ontario), Emma Donoghue: https://www.theguardian.com/books/201...
