Last year I read The Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches by Gaétan Soucy. It was really out there/bizarre/not for the faint of heart. Not saying you shouldn't try it but be prepared!

Two I've read this past year and would recommend are And the Birds Rained Down by Jocelyne Saucier and The Douglas Notebooks by Christine EddieI also keep meaning to check out Gabrielle Roy's work, which is this years goal.
I'm debating between two books for this square Nikolski by Nicolas Dickner and Stormy Cove by Bernadette Calonego. Calonego is not a Canadian author, but the book takes place in Newfoundland.
@Allison - I have a second hand Nikolski on my shelf so might be reading that one too although I am interested in reading more by Saucier as I so enjoyed As the Birds rained down.
