Laura | 1 comments I am reading "The Underground Railroad" and having a hard time getting through. Is anyone else having this issue?

Diane McPhail (dianecmcphail) | 34 comments I have it on my shelf to start after a few other "to do's", but I do keep hearing people having a difficult time, particularly getting into it. The writing has been described to me as "very dense", like making your way through thick undergrowth in a forest. And I had assumed this would be an enlightening story about the actual history of the Underground Railroad. Having finished my Civil War era novel, I was eager to begin this book. However, now I hear that the author has turned the "railroad" into an actual train, metaphorically. I do plan to read it because it has gotten so much praise. And I am willing to struggle through dense language, but I am a bit less eager than I was. I may be greatly surprised and pleased that he has made this subject even more complex as good literature.

Maya B | 825 comments I tried to read it a couple of months ago and could not finish. I had a hard time getting attached to the characters. the story didn't feel believable in my opinion.

message 4: by Brina (new)

Brina Partially is the hype. I tried but didn't mesh with the characters either.

Brina I tried and read the first few chapters but couldn't connect with the characters. I am glad that I didn't read back to back with Homegoing or I would have been even more frustrated.
