Hey Y'all. As you know I'm just an amateur. So, every time a new idea pops into my head, I write it down now. I must have 10 or 12 snippets, but 3 story lines that I'm actually writing a sentence here and there and trying to make something out them. So here am wondering about the rest of the writers and wannabe writers in the group. How many works in progress do you typically have going at one time?

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) | 1216 comments A lot. And that's a good thing. You never know what that snippet might become, so I'm always writing an idea down.

That's good to know. I get a new idea almost every day now. I've either been writing them in a notebook, or typing them up during my break at work and saving them to my flash drive.

Too true. I think I heard somewhere that Asimov was writing like 5 different stories at one time on 5 different computers lol. So I think that's normal. Just as long as you have them down somewhere, you can refer back to them. :-)

Say, you ladies feel like starting up the writing challenge threads again? I've been kind of missing those.

I'm pretty shy about my writing, but I think that would be a good way to help get out of my comfort zone.

Echo (mrsbookmark) | 307 comments I think any creative person has more than one idea at a time. I have 4, in different stages. I prioritize writing according to deadlines or stage of process. Sometimes, a story can be carefully outlined but just doesn't quite flow. Then, you can get a side idea and realize that it works.

I would love to do the writing challenge threads again.

Excellent! I shall pop one up to see what theme everyone wants. :-)

Shiree McCarver | 305 comments In stead of a regular diary I keep a future book diary. So when I get an idea I write it down and if I already have the visualization of characters I write that down too. I start by writing the theme at the top of the page so I know what to strive for in the story.

This way I get it out my head so it won't override the story am writing. If you don't get the starting books undercontrol you will never get one published because you won't finish one. Starting books and stopping others become an addition and give you a false sense of accomplishment.

I've been there. I finally had to tell myself what good are all these ideas if no one knows about it but me? lol

I think keeping a future book diary is an excellent idea Shiree. I may try to do something more like that. I started a story the other day, and I'm having fun with it, and would like to keep the momentum going for that one.

Yes,Michelle get one started and you will see that it work, because you will find as you are working on the one you're having fun with now will trigger off more ideas that won't fit that book and it will trigger off the need to start another book and that one will be just as thrilling and fun. You can make a career off this type of writing, however you can become a published writer from it, because everyone want a finished product and that's the hardest part of writing getting through that freaking middle. lol

Echo (mrsbookmark) | 307 comments I keep notebooks of book ideas. Sometimes I write them like blurbs and add little illustrations. This helps me to focus on the one project that has to be typed/edited/formatted for a submission, while letting my mind play around with ideas.

Also, I found that writing a final scene or chapter first helped me complete projects because I knew what my goal was. This has worked really well for completing short stories.

I really want to be a writer so I set a yearly goal. My 2013 goal was to write an M/M romance novella. I wrote three, and got one accepted for pub a month ago.

My 2014 goal is to write an SF romance that I started last nano. It's my first go at a whole novel length, but even on my down days I refuse to give up. By December 31, 2014 IT WILL BE DONE.:)

I write in my head first and then computer. I tend to write more than one story at a time and yes, a story can come to a halt while I focus more on the other one.

I'm shy when it comes down to writing. I took a chance at writing stories for writing challenges. It been a while, since I have posted a new part to my stories. I don't have the internet right now. But, I'm still writing in my head. Scenes are forever coming to me.

Hi Michelle

message 22: by Pygmy (new)

Pygmy Do you count serious story lines or just ideas that felt like potential at some point in your life?

For me, after my current blasian WIP, I have...upwards of 14+ ideas. =___=;; Granted, for me, I started out drawing comics, so if I actually created character designs, then in my mind that meant I was pretty darned inspired at some point. However, I'm at the stage where I see no future in finishing any of my ideas as comics unless I win the lottery and then spend every waking hour drawing, so writing them out seems to be the faster alternative.

message 23: by AlTonya (new)

AlTonya | 20 comments Hard for me to work on more than 2 at a time. Even then I'm usually at different stages of the process. For instance, I may be on final draft stage of one while on the premise/outline stage of another:-)

message 24: by Barbara (new)

Barbara James Juggling projects? At most two works in progress at at time, but they are in much different stages. As for the other random projects that I have in mind, I don't even think of them as works in progress. They are too nebulous, so I just jot down notes and ideas as they occur to me, for working on when I'm ready to start writing.

message 25: by Monique (new)

Monique (mfh2161) | 104 comments Two self-published, and two projects in the works.
I write under a pseudonym and prefer to keep way under the radar (i.e. no marketing, branding, etc.) until I get one of the two finished...which will take forever. lol

Like many of you, I've also jotted down ideas or scene sketches that pop up in my head.

Cool thread!
