I read Stranger in a Strange Land for one of my Grade 13 English classes. From my recollections this is going to a tough one to adapt. There is some action in the beginning of the book, but a lot of it is more (I think) a vehicle for Heinlein to put forth some of his ideas on how society ought to be. As well sex is not necessarily ignored, not unusual for Heinlein of this period. Now that I think about it, given that we read this one in our first semester (Science Fiction), and Stone Angel in the second semester (Canadian Literature) Ken Campbell would have gone apoplectic. I can't comment on which channel it should be one as neither are available up here. Oh yes, I enjoyed the novel when I read it and have read it a couple of times since then.
There are two versions of this book. Quote from the web site:
http://www.heinleinsociety.org/rah/wo...
"The completed manuscript of STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND was 220,000 words. The version printed by Putnams in 1961 was 160,000 words. During January of 1961 Robert Heinlein cut 60,000 words from the novel he intended "to break [me] loose from a straitjacket,".
I read the uncut version ten years ago. I doubt very much the uncut version would be allowed to be read, even in a modern times High School.
I've read both versions. Their is no appreciable difference between the two other than the shorter one looks like an editor went through it and cut out all the wordier, sloppily written, extraneous stuff, which is the same thing I did for authors when I edited novels professionally. The shorter is the far superior version and will save you time.
In my case the key thing is I mentioned that I was in Grade 13. There are only one province in Canada where schooling goes that high, Ontario. All other provinces (save Quebec which is completely different) only go to grade 12 and then it is on to university or whatever. In Ontario Grade 13 is only taken by those students who are planning on going to University. Thus in some schools we were treated the same as if we were already in University. Hence some of the reading matter in our English classes.

I do not know, the show "Magicians" is a little on the soft core side.
I enjoyed reading Stranger in a Strange Land.
