Kristie | 19573 comments rules:

Part 1: The challenge is to read 12 books throughout the year based on the answers you made to the survey. You will receive a badge for completion of the challenge.

Part 2: Read an additional 12 books

Part 3: Read all 50 books.

------------------------------------------------------------

When you complete a book for the challenge, you need to leave a new message in your personal thread explaining the following:

- a countdown of the badges you read - Part 1: 1/12, 2/12, 3/12, etc. If you are working on subsequent badges, you will need to preface with Part 2 or Part 3.

- the book you read, link to it and the cover

- the question it relates to

- an explanation as to how the book you chose relates to your answer to the question

------------------------------------------------------------

General Rules:

1. You must read 12 different books. You may not count one book for two questions. You may not repeat a question. For example, you can't read two books for question 1 and leave out question 2.

2. You may not combine books with the Monthly Challenge.

3. The challenge is from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017. You must start and complete your books within the year AND within the time that you start the challenge. If you are late to start the challenge, you may not count books prior to when you start even if they were started/read after January 1.

4. Books must be at least 175 pages long. They may be any genre (unless specified in a task) and in any format (audiobook, ebook, hardcover/paperback). In the case where the edition you read does not specify page numbers, we will go with the edition from the Goodread’s search function.

5. If a task refers to the title, the subtitle doesn’t count.

6. If a task refers to the cover, it will be based on the cover of the issue you decide to read.

7. You will need to start your own reporting thread in this folder to track your progress. There will be a thread set up to report your success in completing the challenge and requesting your badge.

Kristie | 19573 comments I'm going to try to complete this without using my parenthesis. This will be fun to gopher!

Edit: I really need to make sure I finish this challenge earlier next year. I'm spending time gophering instead of finishing my 2016 challenge!

Also, I think there will be a few that I can fill in as I go and not necessarily plan ahead. Then, if they aren't filled by the second half of the year I'll gopher them.

Sounds like a good plan, Kristie. I also neglected my 2016 challenge today, and gophered when I could have finished another book for my geo-cache challenge. But who can resist a chance to gopher?

message 13: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19573 comments Thanks, Lori. I agree. I always enjoy the gophering process. I probably spend way to much time on it, but I'm ok with that. lol

jaxnsmom | 8339 comments Kristie wrote: "I'm going to try to complete this without using my parenthesis. This will be fun to gopher!"

I don't understand what this means, so I'm going to ask about the parenthesis.

Your person to meet could be anyone. A lot of people picked dead people - I even chose a fictional character, Jean-Luc Pickard of the Enterprise :)

Some of my answers have parenthesis, for example for #2 my response was "to watch: American Football, to play: Volleyball
(I also love to watch gymnastics and ice skating, particularly during the Olympics.)," so I will try to find a book with American football or volleyball, but not gymnastics or ice-skating because those are in parenthesis. Hope that makes more sense.

Kristie | 19573 comments jaxnsmom wrote: "Your person to meet could be anyone. A lot of people picked dead people - I even chose a fictional character, Jean-Luc Pickard of the Enterprise :)"

I saw that afterwards, but had already put my answer in, so I figured I'd keep it. Alan Rickman probably would have been a good one though!

message 17: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments Some nice books Kristie!

I'm going to borrow The Jungle Book for question 34, great idea :)

message 18: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19573 comments Thanks, Peggy. :)

message 19: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19573 comments Crap... I just spent a full hour gophering books and updating my thinking spot. I was really excited about some of the books I found. Then, I clicked to a different page on accident and lost the whole edit. ugh!

Kristie | 19573 comments Peggy wrote: "Oh no!"

So mad! I had some really good ideas and I didn't put them in my other document. I just updated directly into the thread. It's my own fault, but so frustrating! Now I need to try to remember at least some of them.

message 22: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments I feel for you :( Happened to me too but with only two books added. After that I made sure I saved the post after every few books. I hope you will remember most of them!

message 23: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19573 comments I've added a few, but I'll have to gopher again to get most of them. Some I pulled off lists and found that I had them on my TBR or were free Kindles I had purchased and forgotten about, so I don't remember them.

I hadn't saved in the whole hour, so I lost a bunch. The worst part is that I thought about it a few times, but still didn't save. I certainly learned my lesson!

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Gotcha. I couldn't figure out where the parentheses came from. Looking at your #2 makes it perfectly clear :)

message 27: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments I like your thinking space for your list of books. I have mine all down on paper now, except for one question. Yeah, wait until you start searching for "shower" books. :0)

message 31: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19573 comments I think that's about all the gophering I'm going to do for a while. I have a lot to start with and will probably gopher as I go anyway. I really need to get back to completing my 2016 challenge! Almost there.

message 32: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19573 comments I finished my first book for the challenge!

Part 1: 1/12

The Woman in Cabin 10
The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

3. What colour are your eyes?
My Answer: hazel (mostly blue with some green)
* Read a book where the colour of your eyes is the main colour of the cover, or the word is in the title.

I decided to go with a mostly blue cover, since my eyes are mostly blue. The book cover of this book is different shades of blue, as are my eyes. I also like that the cabin window is a circle on the cover which reminds me of an eye.

I read this because the author is also married with children, which she states on her GR page. Kelly Barnhill

14. What is something you use daily?
My Answer: My phone.
* Read a book with that word in the title. Or, is on the cover. Or…. Get creative. What kind of book will represent that item?

Fat Fridays Fat Fridays by Judith Keim

I had intended to use this book somewhere else, but it seemed to fit here so well that I switched it. The women in this book spend a lot of time on the phone. Making calls, waiting for calls, receiving calls, talking on the phone...enough so that I commented on it while reading. So, I decided to switch it to my phone task.

message 37: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21509 comments Great tie in to your daily use question. Isn't "the chance find" a great part of these challenges?

Janice (jamasc) | 60451 comments I'm looking forward to reading this book. I read Big Little Lies and enjoyed it.

message 41: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19573 comments I enjoyed it, Janice. I know a lot of people were frustrated by the BBQ happening so late in the story, but I enjoyed the relationships and character growth. The BBQ is important, but only as an event and how it affects everyone. If you go into it looking for a big mystery, you will be disappointed. I think the blurb does the book an injustice by focusing on that, even though the book tries to build it up too. If you put the BBQ aside while reading, I think you enjoy it more. Just my two cents. :) I look forward to seeing what you think of it.

message 43: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60451 comments Is the BBQ similar to Trivia Night in Big Little Lies? You know at the beginning that something happens at Trivia Night which occurs at the end of the book.

message 44: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19573 comments Pretty much. You have some clues and they make it sound really important. It doesn't occur until about 2/3 through in this one, then you have the fall-out from the incident.
