Read - I remember reading this 30 years ago but not as a comedy. maybe one to try and read again. I was very young at the time.
I read this book about five years ago. I didn't find it very funny, and a couple of chapters at the end of the book were very grim. I would be interested in learning how other readers feel about the book.
As I was reading it, I kept comparing it to the classic TV series MASH, very unfavorably.

I know it's the Guardian's definition of genre that we're following here but some of the inclusions in the Comedy section are a bit strange. I was thinking this earlier when I saw Mr Norris Changes Trains. It seems if they have any humour in them at all that's where they go!
I agree Ruth. I wonder if those who compiled the list have actually read the books. The humour list seems to have the most questionable (bizarre) choices.
It goes again to the personal. I remember disliking this book immensely when I read it years ago, but several scenes have come back to me again and again. I wonder if I would appreciate it more now that I have a bit more, ahem, life experience.
