Carolien (carolien_s) I've looked through all the threads and cannot find anything for this category. I'm looking for books about the earth in terms of how it was formed, its current structure and geology e.g. what is magma and where is it in the earth, tectonic plates, how mountains are formed etc. Suitable for 7 year old - so pictures, but with a bit more content.

Any ideas please?

Chris Meads | 94 comments I went looking for you and went to thriftbooks.com. I found this book but I don't know the age of the child for it. There are experiments that maybe the child and the adult can do together. It's called Geology Crafts For Kids: 50 Nifty Projects to Explore the Marvels of Planet Earth.

Fjóla (fjolarun) | 260 comments My son went through a phase where he was fascinated with earth and its core, magma, tectonic plates, volcanoes and stuff. It wasn't easy finding something at his level, although DK sort of came to the rescue. He ended up reading Pocket Genius: Earth cover to cover (I think most of the books in this series are actually great for little guys who want to learn), but another book he spent hours and hours with was Earth, also borrowed from the library. It's not written for children, but the pictures are so beautiful and fascinating. We'll probably want to get our own copy. Inside Volcanoes was also pretty good.

If I knew more books, this would be a good topic for a list. Joe Kaufman's Big Book about Earth and Space would be ideal, if it wasn't so hard to find. I don't think it's that outdated. And finally, we have Journey to the Center of the Earth on our to-read list, but didn't check it out yet, so I don't know how good it is.

Carolien (carolien_s) Thanks so much for the ideas. There seems to be piles of good children's books on the planets and space, but very few on the earth!

Jenny | 16 comments We recently checked out The Magic School Bus Inside the Earth. I thought it did a great job of discussing what was going on under the ground. My kids (5, 7, 9) enjoyed the pictures and the stories. They always come away from these books having learned something or at least having had their questions answered.

Carolien (carolien_s) That looks exactly like what I am looking for. Thanks so much.
