I read this awhile back and didn’t enjoy it much. I found young Pernod to be an irritating little hoodlum. But apparently this was hugely popular in its day. I may not have been in the right mood...
The writing was very good, though. Just the clever use of language which we don’t see much in fiction anymore.

I read this a couple of years ago while travelling and waiting for connections. It was perfect for that and I thought it was really funny.
I’m not surprised. I can easily believe that I was not in the right frame of mind to appreciate it. So glad you enjoyed it. I’ll give it another look someday.
We took a train across Canada from Toronto to British Columbia. One day we spent a lot of time sitting on sidings waiting for the freight trains to pass. I read most of A Study in Scarlet on trains.
That sounds lovely. My father has long dreamed of taking the train across Canada. It must be very beautiful.
It was a great trip. There were people from all over the world on the train. And the food was actually good!
