One of the things I remember the most from this book is the following.
If young boys spotted a man with a bushy beard, they would yell "beaver" and laugh and point. I read the book when most men had no, or very short beards.
Beards are now back in fashion for some young men, and I have seen a large variety. I can imagine those little boys yelling beaver all the time.
The story is about a young boy/man and his uncle? who has a wonder elixir called Tono Bungay. It is funny.

In the UK now there are lots of young men with bushy beards and the young boys would yell 'hipster' at them!

We call them hipster here in Toronto as well. I wonder if they would be considered the "dandies" of today.
I have read a few books of H.G Wells, and he has a wide range of writing styles- from War of the Worlds to TonoBungay to history. He is a talented writer.

And so forward thinking!

Tr1sha | 283 comments I didn’t enjoy this book, abandoned it for a while then tried again & finished it this time. Having read it, I have no idea at all why it’s classed as “comedy”. The only part I enjoyed was the section about Marion - this was beautifully & sensitively written.
