Librivox has free audio files of books in the public domain read by volunteers. They even have an app now for listening on the go. I love their work and use them all the time. (But you must be prepared for the fact that the volunteer readers are just like you and me... Average folks who love to read books.)

Obvious though this is, I'm just going to say it... Library.
Not just the fabulous book-filled building, but also the library system website, which often gives you access to free ebooks and audio.

That's why I enjoy some of them so much Renee - Kara Shallenberg, a.k.a Kayray reads to you as if she's a friend and just says 'oops' if she stumbles or misreads something and reads it again. She sometimes makes little remarks and you can often hear her bird tweeting in the background!

Yes, I love those beauties fully human details. But some reviews are just rude. I'll never understand that.

Project Gutenberg is a good source for obscure and scholarly works, as well as newer books in the public domain.
My Ipad has a books app and have just loaded the Sherlock Holmes stories and a Verne novel for when I travel, as well as books.

I got Around the World in 80 Days and they had it in French, which was good. I was a French major in university and taught French as a substitute teacher, so I was happy to get it for free, since French books are expensive.

Very nice Rose. I actually have the non fiction book that's a companion to that. It's about two women reporterswho replicate the trip in the book for thier respective newspapers. I forget what the title is now...

I think it's Eighty Days by Matthew Goodman. One of the reporters was Nellie Bly. I've been meaning to read it, too.

Audible has been making all kinds of things free to members through their “catalog.” Not just terrible stuff or private domain either, but things people might actually have paid to read. You know what I mean.
