I'll finally get to Circling the Sun for this one. It was one of my BOTM picks a few months back that I haven't gotten to yet.
Half of a yellow sun is one of my favorite books and movies everrrrrrrr. I'm thinking Belonging in Africa by Jo Alkemade, but it's set in 1978 so I could use that for the 1970's square. Hmmm...
I work on African literature(s), so this one will be the easiest prompt for me :D But I'd love to recommend books. So if you want something from a specific country or genre etc.pp may be I can help out :)
Some of my favorite books set in Africa include Long Walk to Freedom, The Power of One, The Dark Child, The Fortunes of Wangrin, Aké: The Years of Childhood, and Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali. If you're looking for a comic book, Aya is pretty good. It takes place in the Ivory Coast in the 1970s, so it could cover more than one category. I'll probably read Biko, since I only read part of it and it's been on my shelf for a while.

Charlott, if you'd like to make a list or add books to the shelf for this topic, please feel free!

Would the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books count? I love Precious Ramotswe. It's in Botswana. I need to read the rest of those books.

If it takes place in Africa, it counts! :)

I'm hoping to do Purple Hibiscus by Chinamanda Ngozi Adichie or Under the Udala Trees since I recently purchased both. I can also highly recommend The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma. It's amazing and one of my favorites the year I read it.
I loved The Fishermen. I have a few on my shelves I can use for Set in Africa. I'm using the couple of Litsy challenges to get through the books I own and haven't read. I've chosen my AtoZ books and crossing over with this challenge. So much fun !
I bought Purple Hibiscus today in one of the charity shops, I loved Americanah and Adiche's writing style so this will be my 'Set in Africa' choice...although that could change with the amount of recommendations I see on Litsy!
If you're in the mood for more of a classic, I'd recommend Achebe's Things Fall Apart. Another older, but great story is Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible. I think I'll read Half of a Yellow Sun since I have it sitting on my shelf!
Deborah wrote: "The Poisonwood Bible has been in my TBR for a while!"Oh yes! Same here. Hmmmm that's a good one. I also have had Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness on my shelf for years - NF but it's in Africa....
My book club is reading Things Fall Apart next month so I may have to choose that one (going to try to double up with as many of these as possible)
I just finished The Book of Memory by Petina Gappah. It's set in Zimbabwe and was accessible and interesting.
