El I saw this list on LA Times Blogs and thought it was a fun one, if for no other reason than they used symbols to classify the books! :)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Hmmm. Strange - but interesting - combination of books. The Scarlet Letter being there kind of took me off-guard.

Dan, I agree. I think they're trying to say there would be no postmodernism now without Shakespeare, Hawthorne, or Stern, but I also think the inclusion of them on this list is superfluous. I glanced through a lot of the comments at the end of the blog and agree there are a lot of exclusions, many of which could have filled the holes of such early writers. But then I'm a stickler - if you say postmodern, I expect it to be postmodern in the standard definition. Still, food for thought.

Suzanne (bellamy22) | 610 comments I agree, El and Dan. Actually this list is almost surreal in a way ... a VERY unique grouping.
