In my book of choice, Just One Day, I will be responding to various well written passages. This read of mine is about a girl, Lulu, who is on a teen tours trip, which she recieved as a graduation gift. While in London, she meets a man who reminds her of herself in many ways but one; he has a heart for adventure. The two meet again on the train that is scheduled to take Lulu to her last stop before home. But while on the train, Willem, the boy Lulu met, convinces her to explore the city of her dreams, Paris, for just one day. In the midst of exploring, Lulu finds herself falling in love with Paris, and the new side she sees of herself in this adventure. ‘’Willem has also fallen asleep; his long body is curved in the space around mine like a question mark. We aren’t touching at all except for his one hand, which is tucked into the crease of my hip, casually, like a dropped scarf, like it blew there on the soft breeze of sleep.’’ (pg 103) Particularly in this passage, I was draw into it with the beautiful details used, such as ‘’his long body is curved in the space around mine like a question mark,’’ and ‘’all except for his hand, which is tucked into the crease of my hip, casually, like a dropped scarf.’’ These details are what I crave in the genre of romance; something delicate enough to make you appreciate the human interaction, yet something powerful enough to make you crave what the characters are feeling. Another passage that was powerfully written, was on page 109. ‘’He’s standing so close to me now, gently pressing the bandana against my neck. And then the cut on my neck is not the point of exit for blood, but the point of entry for this weird line of electricity that is surging between us.’’ I LOVE that the author uses the analogy of electricity in this, it makes me feel the true bond between these beautiful teens falling in love, even if they don’t quite realize it yet. I believe that these passages, along with many others so far, are a beautiful way to connect with the audience emotionally, and make the main characters even more special and personal to the readers of this novel.
