Ive been enjoying audio books most of my life. Even 25 years ago I would grab a audiobooks cassette (from my Fathers stash) and pop it in my Walkman while doing chores, walking to school, riding my bike, you name it. If you cant find the time to sit and read ... have someone read to you.
I will admit... I bought both books TWICE, one paperback and one Audio version. After reading book 1, I felt I needed to listen to it before I start book 2. A few late nights reading and I was sure I blew through some chapters too fast. Im glad I did ... Nick Pedehl's did a great job on this one. I felt he was able to capture a lot of the subtle humor that I didn't catch on to reading in the first time. I do like his voice, I enjoy how the narrator is able to convey the evolution of Rez's voice throughout the books.
Being that I both read and listened to these books, I feel the accents of the characters (a challenging feat by Podehl) allowed me to listen and absorb more easily. I may hold out and listen to Book 3 for that reason. Not a lot of narrators can pull that off as well as he did, even if a few were a little over the top ;)
Best, Christian

These were my first audio books. I read the books some time ago in Kindle app. Because the new book was to be released soon decided to purchase the audio version instead of reading them again. One interesting note, my husband, not normally a fantasy fan... was in the room when I was listening (we were painting the living room) and ended up hooked. :)

I think he did an awesome job reading. I hope he will continue to read for the series
The audiobooks seem to be bestsellers! I'm pretty sure this means that Nick will be back as narrator, and that the audiobook for Bk3 will be out as soon as possible.
I've always been more of a reader than listener... but I really loved the audiobooks for KDT. I'm very tempted to get some other books read by Nick Podehl because I thought he did such a good job.
I've totally been on an audiobook kick after these books! I listen to them in the car, but sometimes at night, too... with a timer set! It's been fun!

Before I read KDT I was struggling to find a book to read. After I listened to KDT I liked Nick's reading so much I looked up what books he had read for, and brought those books just because he was reading them. :)
My first listen with Nick Podehl was "The wise mans fears" after reading "The name of the wind" both by Patrick Rothfuss.
The name of the wind was 662 pages and book 2 came in at almost 1000 pages ... so the audiobook was my best option if I still intended on remaining employed....
If you've not read The Kingkiller Chronicle ... it's a MUST read. And if you like Nick Podehl then check it out too on audible.

I have read the Kingkiller Chronicles, I loved them, and cannot wait for the next book. I plan on listening to the audio version when I re-read the series so I can see how good a job Nick Podehl does with the story.
I have not read Kingkiller Chronicles... will add them to my TBR list. Because I enjoyed Nick Podehl, maybe I'll try the audio version.
I read Name of the Wind... but only got part way through book2... It just seemed to be too much the same as the first book, and that was LONG. I usually love long, long books, but so much of the same was hard to take.
I have to admit that I petered out reading The Wheel of Time, too (I read through to book 5, but really couldn't take any more). It felt like I wasn't getting anywhere even slogging through hundreds of pages.
Rothfuss is a better writer, I think, but I'm not sure if it was for me. HOWEVER-- I might try Wise Man again in audio to see if I can bear it better in that form. That Podehl is narrating it is a big point in its favor.

I just couldn't handle reading anymore. I was disappointed because I was expecting it to be better than it was.
Jordan got lots of comments about how he could have used a good editor, and I have to agree with those--but his fans were loyal and he got big numbers, so maybe he was doing just fine. I brought him up because he had so many happy readers who loved the series, and I felt like I was bucking the tide.
A bit the same with Rothfuss... Name of the Wind got SO many good comments, and was loved by critical readers, too. I haven't heard a negative word. I liked the book, and looked forward to the sequel, but was disappointed it hadn't moved on... at all. Well, a bit more about the magic, but still similar people all against him at the school, etc. But I might go back and read it--or listen in audio. It wasn't BAD...
I was mostly reading Jordan to see what everyone was raving about--and also because I was doing some artwork for a Wheel of Time card game. It was readable, but I really couldn't attach well to any of the characters and people and I'd finish a book and have no idea what actually went on that moved the story forward...
It's weird because I usually like 90% of the books I pick up... Although I think I'm getting pickier as I get older and find that there's less time and many books I'd rather read than some...

With noise-blocking headphones! --Oh, actually, I have recently been at a bar listening to an audiobook, so as long as the music isn't too loud, it's do-able! (I'm SO anti-social!)
The audio for this book was fantastic. It was my first time hearing Nick Podehl but I was impressed.I really liked how he did the voices because i could tell the character by the voice. With the perspective jumping so frequently, it made it much easier to follow.
I feel he had to do Rez with a noble voice, it helps "us" understand why everyone thought he was a noble.
As for Wheel of time. I agree Jordan got super bogged down for the middle 4-5 books. When Brandon Sanderson took over for the i think the last 3 it really turned it around and finished the series strong.
My next book i was planning was the Kingkiller Chronicles, but only have 2 books and nothing new in several years is a bit of a put off.
Error in Audiobook? In the 1st audio book (spoiler alert) -
When the master is dying and he says the 2nd rule but coughs so it comes out "Kill With (cough occurs) Conscience", Rezkin repeats this back as "Kill Without Conscience".
Yet the rest of the series when Rezkin recollects this most key moment he recalls this as "Kill With Conscience".
I'm assuming this was a mistake by the reader? Or was this a typo the reader read. I only have the Audible at this point.
I asked my wife (because she is reading it right now) because I also found it kind of confusing. She agreed that it was kill with Conscience. I'm wondering if it was actually the master thinking about it like he did for rule one so we know its actually protect and honor the king.
The dying man didn't get the words out right. He was suppose to say kill without conscience. But instead only got out kill with conscience. Some of it what was said was in his thoughts, some he spoke out loud. That is what I assumed, I was a little confused with that at first as well.
Yes, that was confusing in the audio. I'd read the books first, so I knew what was meant... I think, as Tanya says, part of that was in his thoughts, but it came out as "with conscience." But I'm not sure if it was the reader getting it wrong, or just that, as written, it was clearer than when reading it??? Probably the latter... since it IS a key point and they'd probably have had an error pointed out. Hard to say, though.
I REALLY need to read the books again.
And I might actually get around to that if we are waiting a while longer for Book 3...!

I have both Audiobooks. I honestly just bought it for the cover and Nick Podehl but 5 minutes in and i was hooked..
Oooh... what else do you like that Nick Podehl read? I really liked his voices on the KDT books.
The ones read by Nick Podehl are:Cephraels Hand by Melissa McPhail
A Power Renewed: Sentinels of Creation by Robert W. Ross
The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss
I tried the Casts and Outcasts audio... but somehow the characters and world didn't grip me. Of course, I've been in a bad mood lately, so most books are not really catching my interest, unfortunately.
Which of the Nick Podehl audiobooks would you recommend the most?

Name of the wind by Patrick Rothfuss is one of my favorite series of all time. Not to me to mention for 1 audible credit you're getting hours and hours of a great story.
Agreed...Patrick Rothfuss's books are by far the best books (after KDT of course) that Nick Podehl has read.In fact the books are so good it doesn't matter who is narrating.
The kingkiller audios that I have were narrated by Rupert Degas is there other versions? Or Rupert Degas a stage name or something I'm confused?
Different reader. Nick Podehl released a different version of KK Chronicles. It's much better.@Rick - I agree but i hate change so lets stay with Nick hahaha
Dodger wrote: "Would be interested to hear nick podehl version where can i get it?"Audible has them...might get lucky on YouTube. I have found a few audiobooks that are older out there. Never heard the version by Degas so I can't say if Podehl's version is better.
I can say that while some of the ancillary characters sound very familiar to those in KDT, the main characters have enough uniqueness in them that you wont be thinking of Rez when you listen to Kvothe.
The degas version i have is from audible and i can't find podehl's version on audible maybe because i am in the UK? Does anyone else know where to find it thats not audible? But thanks Rick for the reply anyway

I just finished book 3 audio book! It’s awesome and in my opinion just MORE story than books 1 and 2 combined. I won’t say much more other than ... it’s not what I expected... it’s better.
I will say, reading the books gave me a certain impression. I hear the characters voices in a certain way. However listening to Nick Podehl's interpretation give me a better insight - for me at least - into the characters and KK's intentions.
Kingdoms and Chaos, KDT4, is 13th on the NY Times Audiobooks Bestseller List!

I usually don't do audiobooks, but signed up to Audio and figured I should try a few, so of course I bought Free the Darkness and Reign of Madness (sadly, the only two available so far).
I really enjoyed Nick Podehl's reading. He was a lot more dramatic than most, but I think it worked well enough, as many of the characters were pretty distinct. I'm not sure about the various accents.
What did you all think?
What did you think of Rez's voice?
I thought it was a bit posh, but it worked OK. He was doing his "noble" thing through much of the books, so ...
I enjoyed both books on audio and look forward to more!
