Sandi (sandin954) | 1276 comments Hi all,

Here are my November reads:

Top Reads

Savages by Don Winslow Savages
Don Winslow
Highly entertaining thriller set in Southern California with an interesting plot about the drug trade that combined graphic violence, sex, and humor. The author is one of my favorites and I loved the writing style he used for this book. Listened to the audio version which was narrated by Michael Kramer who did an excellent job.

The Ways of the Dead (Sully Carter #1) by Neely Tucker The Ways of the Dead
Neely Tucker
Despite a few first novel flaws, I really enjoyed this book about a former foreign correspondent who is working on the Metro section of the Washington Post in 1999. The DC setting was well done, many of the characters were unique, and I really got caught up in the plot. I am usually partial to series about crime solving journalists and will definitely continue on with this series.

Buried Prey (Lucas Davenport, #21) by John Sandford Buried Prey
John Sandford
One of the better entries in this always good series. I really liked the segment set back in 1985 with the young Lucas on patrol trying to make detective. I thought the present day plot was also good and I always enjoy the supporting characters. Listened to the audio version which was narrated by Richard Ferrone who did his usual excellent job.

Harry's Game by Gerald Seymour Harry's Game
Gerald Seymour
Classic thriller first published in 1975, I found this to be well written with lots of action and a realistic seeming look at Belfast during The Troubles.

Good Reads

The Whistler by John Grisham The Whistler
John Grisham
Interesting enough audio but not among my favorites by this author. I thought the plot was fine but did not really connect with any of characters and felt the whole thing was overlong. This was narrated by Cassandra Campbell who did a workmanlike job.

The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell The Other Typist
Suzanne Rindell
I found this to be a quick enjoyable read for the most part and thought the writing was fine but had some reservations with the overall plot and found the ending kind of lackluster.

Bad Vibes (The Fizz and Buchanan Mystery Series) by Joyce Holms Bad Vibes
Joyce Holms
A fun read. The main characters are a classic mixed matched pair, the plot was fairly plausible for an amateur detective story, and I enjoyed the Edinburgh setting.

Uncle Fred in the Springtime by P.G. Wodehouse Uncle Fred in the Springtime
P.G. Wodehouse
A visit with the Blandings Castle gang is always guaranteed to entertain and this entry had the all the usual elements along with the very engaging Uncle Fred. Listened to the audio narrated by Jonathan Cecil who gave a flawless performance.

Life or Death by Michael Robotham Life or Death
Michael Robotham
A very intense stand alone thriller. Plot driven though with pretty well done characterizations, I thought it was perhaps a bit too long but the last quarter of the book was quite hard to put down.

High Country (Anna Pigeon, #12) by Nevada Barr High Country
Nevada Barr
Anna goes undercover at the Yosemite National Park's historic Ahwahnee Hotel in this installment of the series. Lots of action and danger made this a compelling audio. The narration was performed by the always good Barbara Rosenblat.

OK

Witness to a Trial by John Grisham Witness to a Trial
John Grisham
A quick listen but did not really stand alone very well. The narration by Mark Deakins was probably the best part.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17067 comments Good month Sandi!
I'll have to look for the Don Winslow book. I am listening to Carol O'Connell's Blind Sight narrated by Barbara Rosenblat and she keeps reminding me of Anna Pigeon since she narrates both.
