4A Independent Reading discussion

The students at Opportunity high are still locked in the auditorium with Tyler. I was a little shocked and disappointed when some of the characters weren't taking the situation seriously when they were cracking jokes. I feel like this book isn't really a true event that would happen or maybe it is for a little comedic relief. Two students who were not locked in had gotten tools to help open the lock on the door to hopefully break the students out. (pg 111) Unfortunately the student had hit the lock to hard and Tyler had heard it from inside of the auditorium. I am betting that Tyler will be angered by this and go on another rampage and shoot his little sister who was confronting him while it had happened. I feel like he wouldn't shoot his sister considering what he said on page 136, "Move or I will shoot the boy" It shows the he doesn't want to hurt her and there might still be hope for the student body. While all of this is going on at OHS, the two best runners from the track team had ran into town to get help and whilst on their way, they find their teacher dead and stuffed underneath his own car.(pg 64) Even if they get help I doubt they will be able to get into the auditorium. I don't know at this point in the book but I sure hope the remaining students get out unharmed!

Maybe the students were using comedic relief as a coping mechanism. In a situation that intense, I assume high school students would be trying to lighten the mood. It is still painful for me to realize that shootings like this happen in real life.

the threat that this could happen is all too possible, and a good representation of something that is all too frightening to us. Yeah they should take it seriously but have a little tension breaker.
