Good job! I'm hoping to start the book in a day or two. Generally, I read a few books simultaneously, but I'm into one now that's due back at the library soon, so trying to get it done quick. Sorry for any delay on my part.
Have you guys started the book yet? I started it and I didn't really read what it was about. So the first few pages really through me off. I actually had to go back and read the description. (Which I have read before, but I read so many that I don't always remember what goes to what. Lol) But so far so good. I don't know how far you guys are so I'm just going to leave it at this for now. :)
I was planning on starting it today, but now I've got to fly to Florida and I don't want to take a big heavy library book with me. My husband's mom was put on at home hospice, so all the family is going down to gather around her bedside this weekend. She is a wonderful woman and has been a second mom to me. It will be hard on all, but she's had a great long, life. She will turn 91 on December 19. I will be back on Monday, unless plans change, and I'll definitely start it then.
Hello!I'm back from Florida and have got my feet somewhat under me in preparation for Christmas. Just checking to see how the two of you are doing on your progress with LaRose. It's been put on the back burner for me. I need to finish something I'm reading now for another challenge. Seriously hoping to at least start LaRose tomorrow.
Nanci, glad to hear you are back. Both of my in laws were in hospice as well. It's tough, but at least hospice workers are angels. My MIL was also a second mom to me. Hope yours is doing well.I am only about 20 pages in to LaRose! Don't worry about being behind. :)
Thanks for your kind words, Megan.Good to know you're not too far into LaRose yet. I had two of my little grandsons all day and night, so I didn't get much reading done. The book I'm currently reading for my RL book club is just meh, so I just want to get it done!
Hi Megan,I'm about halfway through LaRose. Once I hear where you are in the book, maybe we can start discussing it. I do like how there are two stories within. I'm interested to see how the author ties them together. She always likes to include some of the historic Indian traditions in her novels. I feel really bad for some of the characters in the story so far, particularly Landreaux.
Hope we didn't lose Kristy. She hasn't checked in since the 15th, but maybe she's just busy.
Nanci, I definitely am behind! I'm about a third through the book, my partner and I have been busy entertaining so I haven't had much time to read! hoping to get on it tomorrow. :)
I'm about half way done with the book, it's been slow going for me. ugh! so far the preacher is my favorite character. how did you guys feel about any of the characters?
Oh yes, the preacher is a good guy, although there's still more you'll find out about him as the book progresses. No spoilers!LaRose tore at my heart a lot. To be so young and be forced to be responsible for so many adult feelings was such a burden for him, I felt. My heart also went out to Landreaux. So much guilt to bare.
I have a bit less than 100 pages left! Wooh!I totally agree about LaRose. I also feel absolutely terrible for Maggie. The kids really seem to get the short end of the stick in Peter's family.
Yes they do. I was happy for Maggie that the LaRose's sisters sort of adopted her as their other sister.
Nanci, me too! I'm glad she formed a healthy sistership.I just finished reading the part where Romeo informs Peter of what "really" happened. It seems more unnecessarily cruel than revengeful, but that's my opinion.
Also you weren't lying about the priest! I still like him but I disagree with some of his life choices, lol.
I don't want to spoil it for you, if you're not there yet, but I'm not quite sure about what you mean about Romeo. I've read a few other books so I might be getting it mixed up. Are you talking about when they were kids? Weren't they the two who ran away and that's how Romeo's leg got so broken? I might have the names mixed up. lol
I finished the book yesterday. :) That's all correct! I meant when Romeo told Peter how Dusty had supposedly bled to death rather than dying of a gunshot wound. Then Peter takes Landreux out "hunting".
That's the other thing I was thinking you meant, but I didn't want to spoil it if you weren't there yet. The "hunting" part of the book was quite chilling. I kept thinking what if LaRose hadn't removed all the bullets when he was "cleansing" the house of suicide temptations. The story sure would have taken a big turn another way! Romeo was such a sad, sad character. There was a part of me that felt bad for him, but then another part was just, "Oh my gosh, you are so bad and evil!" Congrats on finishing the book! What did you think of the priest at the very end? I see you ended up giving it 4 stars. I was in between 3 and 4, but I kept comparing it to some of her other books, that I liked better.
I felt for the priest but still didn't agree with his choice to sleep with Emmaline. Overall, I think he was more good than bad. you have to be doing something right for the community to rely/like you so much. I also really enjoyed the fact that the community didn't like the new priest because of his name! I've only read Shadow Tag, so I have a lot of her books to catch up on!
Oh that's right! I forgot about the new priest's name! So funny! I remember when I read it being grateful for that little bit of humor. I also still liked the former priest. Although, like you, I didn't agree with his choice I thought it showed his more human side. I think part of the reason the community liked him was due to the way he showed his vulnerability and how he really liked people.Anything else you'd like to discuss, Megan? Do you want to give Kristy a few more days to check in with us. It sounded like she was due to finish the book in late December. Hope we didn't lose her. :)
The only thing I have left is the ending. Did you feel satisfied with the end? I had so many more questions about how everything went for everybody, so I didn't love the end. Yes, let's give Kristy a few more days, and hopefully we will be starting our new series soon!
The ending is part of the reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 4. I don't mind too much when there's not a "tidy ending", but I too felt the ending left so much undone. It would be good to hear what Kristy thought of the book too. Hopefully she'll check in soon. In the meantime, I'm in a few challenges, so reading like mad. :) We're supposed to fly out Monday morning to FL to visit my mom-in-law on hospice, but we got 10" of snow yesterday. When that happens in VA everything comes to a stop, so we'll see what happens. Right now we can't get out of our neighborhood because we have a steep hill and they don't plow. The airport has been closed anyway, so we'll see what happens.
