This is my first time participating in a group read. How does it work exactly?

Hi Soulaiman,
Glad you will be joining us!
We use this thread for discussing whilst still reading (spoiler tags are used here): https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
The Q&A is here, so if you have any questions for the author ask away: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
And this thread for spoiler discussion (when you have finished.)
I think most members are planning on starting around the 1st of January.
PS If you have anymore questions or are unsure of anything feel free to ask! :)

Great to have you Andrew!
Great to have you Andrew!

the bigger worldbuilding seems to be limited in this first book - the prologue is interesting, reminds me of the white walker scene in A Game of Thrones, i.e. a big menace lurking in the corner while people playing their, well, game of thrones.

The different humanoid races needed a little more definition IMO. They blended together in my mind's eye a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing how the "drowned" race comes into play. Seemed like an awful lot of foreshadowing toward them, but not so much with any of the other races that have yet to make an appearance.
Much like after book 1 of Long Price, I'm not sure where exactly this series is going. But assuming that Master Kit is the runaway priest from the prologue, I'd say that Kit will find himself somehow in the gotta-save-the-world-or-we-all-die role at the end.

But i really started to appreciate the world and the serie in the next books (especially 2 and 3, now reading part 5). Part one felt a bit like an intro to me, setting the stage for what is to come. I think it gets a lot better! An original serie with great twists and cool characters.
More people should read it :)

I also wish there are illustrations somewhere! We only have this: http://www.danielabraham.com/books-by...
The Lovecraftian Drowned ones are very interesting indeed. But in the next book you'll get to see them.

Yes, it bothered me too. But as the books continue it didn't bother me anymore. (dont wanna give anything away). What do you think of Geder? For me, that's the only character that does not feel entirely realistic with his childish escapades. (Can't remember if I felt that after book one too though)

Ditto. I'm holding out hope that things become more platonic between them in the next book. Also, Cithrin kissed Marcus, not the other way around. Considering she's still a minor and was up against a life-altering decision at the time, I'm hoping that it was just a one-time thing. And until I read otherwise, I'm going to live in my bubble where Marcus is solely a friend/father figure to her.

Geder was my least favorite POV character. Part of it was that he seemed a touch unrealistic, but I think more so the problem is that I don't really care about him one way or the other. Not hateable, not loveable, just kind of there. I really enjoyed all of the other POV characters though.

same here.

I actually liked Geder since the first time we met him - he is like a stronger version of Samwell Tarly - and I always have soft spots for book worms. Plus, he has this weird streak of sudden cruelness - I can understand why this makes him seem unrealistic - which makes him (for me) merely an unpredictable character. He is also naturally kind but he is weak and easy to manipulate. Overall, he made an interesting character.
I don't however really enjoy being told over and over again (as in the second book) on how he used to spend his time reading. We got that already.
