Ernest Cline is probably my new favorite writer. I've read both Ready Player One and Armada within the past couple of months and he really has a new flavor to the reading palate.
Clark Ashton Smith is the most surprising find I've made in a long time. The Averoigne Chronicles turned out to be one of my favorite reads of the year.
I joined goodreads this year and it's been a revelation for me. Some really good horror themed reads that I got into this year, with reviews are as follows.
Ancient Affliction by Claudia Chastain. My 5 star review is here.
The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. My 5 star review is here.
The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman. My 4 star review is here.
Vampire Wars by Perry Lake. My 4 star review is here.
The Devils Mouth by Matt Kincade. My 4 star review is here.
For me, it's Adam Nevill. I've read two of his books so far, and have another one waiting on my Kindle.
Two new favorites for me are Blake Crouch and Peter Clines. Blake Crouch wrote the Wayward Pine series. He also wrote Abandon and Dark Matter. Both intriguing. Peter Clines wrote 14.
In the field of horror and bizarro, my personal top discoveries of the year are Kevin Strange and the rest of the Strangehouse gang, especially Jesse Wheeler with his crazy, awesome and delightfully tasteless Dinner At The Vomitropolis.
I've also read and discovered a lot of fantasy in 2016. Guy Gavriel Kay's The Fionavar Tapestry and Jack Vance's Lyonesse were both masterpieces and also new discoveries, but the winner is Michael Swanwick for The Iron Dragon's Daughter
and The Dragons of Babel.

I have discovered so many horror authors this year since I have become more involved with GR.I have enjoyed discovering and reading: Brian Keene, Darcy Coates, Ambrose Isben, Blake Crouch, Amy Cross, William Johnston, and so many others.
Kathy wrote: "After reading this thread, I think I will be discovering a lot more favorite authors."That is what is so great about this horror group! We find new authors to read and great friends too!
I have discovered 2 great horror books and authors this year.....both via kindle/ebooks Paul Pen and Dot Hutchison
Paul Pen wrote the gritty, dark The Light of the Fireflies LIGHT OF THE FIREFLIES
And Hutchison wrote the brutal BUTTERFLY GARDEN The Butterfly Garden
They were my 2 moved loved, NEW authors found for this genre this year. Thank you, Goodreads! -Jen from Quebec :0)
JOHN--- Thanks for your list of authors- I have added Edward Lee to my TBR list...."The Backwoods" looks especially ridiculous, in that GOOD way. As a person who LIVES in what locals here call 'The Backwoods', this one peaks my interest. Have you read this one?-Jen from Quebec :0)
JOHN--- Um, I am Canadian, dude. OF COURSE I know who they are, silly! But I am glad that YOU also know who they are!!Speaking of 'backwoods' people, I am listening to the audio of HILLBILLY ELEGY, read by the author himself - it is a sobering tale of how 'backwoods hillbillies' are thought of and treated in America, and by association, much the same in Canada. Great book thus far! (65% done or so)---- Jen from Quebec :0)
Ahhh, I see. No, I watched a LOT of SCTV in syndication as a youngster, and I also have a GREAT BOOK about SCTV, its cast, behind the scenes stuff, etc etc. Canada has SO much comedic talent....I wonder if I can find that SCTV book here on Goodreads....
aHH! Here it is! Written by one of the Brothers himself, Dave Thomas! Had this book in college, and somebody 'borrowed' it and alas, I haven't seen it since...Bummer. -Jen from Quebec :0)
HAHAHA-- That show is filmed in Quebec! It is on TV ALLLLLL the time here. But JOHN- "Just for Laughs" is like, the OPPOSITE of a HORROR discussion! (Except for that one prank where they trick people into thinking someone has fallen down a manhole in the street and died....) Seriously! They did that!
On the topic of 'hillbilly' or 'backwoods' people as evil doers, this book rocked me to my core- it's about an area in Nova Scotia where the 'hill people' did unspeakable things to their children amidst poverty and addiction issues. All the more horrific because it is TRUE. A terrible, terrible bit of Canadiana:ON SOUTH MOUNTAIN On South Mountain: The Dark Secrets Of The Goler Clan The DARK SECRETS OF THE GOLER CLAN......ANYONE who attends Acadia University in Wolfville Nova Scotia should be MADE to read this book, to see the discrepancy between the 'townies' and the 'valley people' who attend this prestigious university and the poverty that exists just up in the mountains.....*shudders* This was actually difficult to read, knowing that these things went to trial and were factual....A real life case of horror --Jen from Quebec
