Why did Backus reach out to Rachel and why now? Did he want her dead?

My guess is because she is the one who came closest to bringing him down. He feels she is his best adversary and wants to show he can still beat her.

I wish Connelly had made this clearer. He was her mentor and she almost brought him down the first time. I wasn't certain as to why he wanted to have this confrontation now.

I also wish it had been clearer and concluded, like Robin, that he viewed Rachel as a worthy adversary and also wanted a bit of revenge against her.
